Summer homework: Keep practicing your artistic skills. Make time to sketch,
paint, photograph, or sculpt! Your talent will continue to grow as you

Level 1 artists are creating sculptures in the style of Louise Nevelson.
Nevelson predominantly created black sculptures of assembled wood objects
arranged to create complex designs of repeating shapes and forms. Our
artists are creating relief sculptures with found objects of every
description – from paper towel rolls to toys. Objects that students bring
for this will be painted and attached to a base, so these should only be
objects that you do not need ever again. They will become part of your
child’s masterpiece!

Level Two students need to bring in their photograph of an individual that
they consider a hero. It is better if they photograph their hero so that
one side of the face is in light and the other more in shadow. *Any
student who opting to create a self-portrait instead, may create this photo
in class.

Extra Credit for Level 2:
Use the Art Central link on my 'Links' page. Click on the button for
Kathleen Wiley. Look at Wiley's animal portraits. Use the elements and
principles of design to explain how she so effectively creates the textures
of the animals. (Be sure to identify any paintings you use in your
description.)

Students wishing to improve their grade on our Foundations Test, may create
a study reference for the elements and principles of design. Keeping the
lists straight is important. Creating this reference will be a review, and
keeping it in your notes will give you a quick review each time you look at
it.
To create your chart, make a heading for elements and one for principles.
Write each element under the elements heading (include a key word or simple
illustration to remember the definition). Do the same with the principles.
Show your chart to me to receive the extra points - review it to improve
your understanding!

     __________________________________________________________________

For core classes only, our next sketchbook assignment is due September 24th
(Wednesday)-
Select an object that has interesting texture. Use line and value to
represent the texture. (Use the rubric on your assignment log to guide
you. Be sure to record the time you spend on your drawing, and have your
parent initial.)

Remember, you may do a second drawing with these instructions for extra
credit. Record your drawing time and have your parent initial this drawing,
too.
