Grading

Summative assessments: Summative assessments are mainly in the form of major study tests, cumulative writing assignments, response journals, literary analyses, literary reviews, Literary Feasts, and projects. These assessments are designed to measure subject knowledge and thinking skIlls. Summative assessments will count as fifty percent of the total grade.

Formative assessments: Formative assessments include sectional quizzes, daily quizzes, oral assessments, and cooperative participation assessments. The purpose of these assessments is to check for understanding and also to measure consistency of effort. Formative assessments will count as forty percent of the total grade.

Homework: Homework will be checked for completion when it is due. Students who do not have their assignments will receive a grade of zero. This score will not be altered if the assignment is submitted late. The homework grades will count as ten percent of the total grade.

Make-up work: Every student is responsible for making up work missed due to an absence. Any handouts missed will be labeled with the student’s name and placed in a class make-up work folder. Students are responsible for checking this folder when they return to school. According to school policy, students are given five days after an absence to make up any missing assignments. After the five days have passed, missing work will be given a grade of zero. No make-up work will be completed during class time. The student will schedule a time before or after school for all make-up work.

Late work: If a student turns in a assignment after the due date, the score will be lowered eight points each day. Please make every effort to submit work in a timely manner.

Homework: Each student will begin a nine week grading period with a homework grade of "100." For each instance a learner is unprepared without homework, five points will be deducted from the beginning grade of "100."

It contains a wealth of information including assignment dates, project descriptions, assessment calendars, and extra credit information.
