Class Information

Dear Students and Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome your child to my
math class at R.H. Rollings Middle School of the Arts. I know we
are going to have a great year. I will be teaching Pre-Algebra, College Prep
Algebra One, and Honors Algebra One. I have a degree in secondary
mathematics teaching from Clemson University and a master's degree in
science and mathematics for teachers from the College of Charleston.

Materials Required: Students will need to have their notebook with
pencils, and graph paper. It would be great if you had your own scientific
calculator, but this is not required.

Expectations: I have high expectations for student behavior and
responsibility. See the 8th grade Discipline Expectations for details. I
also expect each student to keep an organized notebook with class notes,
activities, returned quizzes, and homework.

Rules: Be safe, Be respectful, Be resourceful, and Be responsible

Consequences: Warning
               Detention and/or parent contact
               Office Referral

Communication: Communication is vital for the success of our students.
If you ever have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call me at the
school. You many also e-mail me from this website.

Attendance: It is extremely important that your child be in class each
day. Discussions and explanations missed when absent are difficult to make
up. If your child is absent, it is their responsibility for making up all
work missed. The student can come see me for extra help or do not
understand the material missed. For more information about our school's
make-up policy, please see the school handbook.

Grading Policy: Grades will be determined from the following:

* Homework: Homework will be assigned almost every night and should
take about 20 minutes to complete. All students will begin each grading
period with a homework grade of 100. Points are deducted for each incomplete
or missing assignment.

* Quizzes: Expect one quiz per week based on the homework assignments and
materials covered during the week.

* Major Tests: Major tests will be given at the end of each unit.

Homework/Classwork/Journal Entries- 30%
Quizzes- 30%
Tests/Projects- 40%

Tutoring: Students are encouraged to see me if they need extra help or to
complete make-up work. Tutoring is offered every Tuesday morning and
Thursday morning at 8:00. I will also be having review sessions before major
tests. If a student needs more time, we can arrange another tutoring
session.

**** Special Note...For the Algebra One students...Algebra One is a
course taken for high school credit, cumulative exams will be administered
at the end of each grading period. Exams for Algebra One Students...At the
end of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters, students will take Quarter Tests. At
the end of the 2nd quarter, a Semester Exam will be given that will account
for 20% of the 1st Semester average. At the end of the year, students will
take the State End-of-Course Test. The results of this assessment will
count as 20% of their final grade.

Please go to the return slip link and print off a copy showing that you
have read and understand the class expectations. On the slip, there is a
place for parent e-mail address and parent and student signatures
(acknowledging you have seen this page). Also, if you have any questions,
comments, or would like to set up a conference, please let me
know.

Thank you for your cooperation and for sharing your child with me this
year.

                                                    Thank you,
                                                    Miss Sweigart
