Part of Speech and Definition

Examples

Noun: a person, place, thing, or idea

president, Mrs. Pinckney, desk, patriotism

Pronoun: a word that takes the place of a noun

he, she, it, I, you, them, they, her, him, us

Adjective: a word that describes a noun

red, curious, immense, mournful, intelligent

Verb: an action word or a word that links the subject to the predicate

climb, jump, scream, celebrate, is, am, are, was, were

Adverb: a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb

suddenly, very, really, slowly

Preposition: position and relationship words

under, over, inside, outside, on, in, over, beyond, during

Conjunction: connecting words

and, or, because, so, if, but, however, in addition, for

Interjection: emotional expressions used in isolation

Oh! You're kidding! Ouch! Ugh! My heavens! Oh my gosh!
