March '07 - S.C. ARCHIBALD RUTLEDGE TOP TEN ARTISTS
It is with great pride that I announce WHS seniors Jacob Reeves and Logan Harrell have been
notified by the State Department of Education they are top ten art finalists in the 2007
Archibald Rutledge competition. I am thrilled that WHS once again has 2 of the top 10 art
seniors in South Carolina. The gathering date for portfolios and award of honors is scheduled
for Friday, April 27th at the State Department of Education, with our new State Superintendent.

March 2007 FOCUS ON YOUTH SHOW, SPARTANBURG ARTISTS GUILD AT ART CENTER
It is with great pride that I announce that WHS students Jacob Reeves, Alex Wetherill and Micha
Taylor had art work juried into the Spartanburg Artists Guild FOCUS ON YOUTH SHOW for grades 9-
12 students in Spartanburg County. Micha had a wire sculpture selected; Alex has a scratchboard
drawing in the show; Jacob had a contour figure drawing with a watercolor wash selected.
At the awards reception for the show at the Spartanburg Arts Center in the Artists Guild
Gallery, A.P. Art student Alex Wetherill's scratchboard drawing was awarded BEST IN SHOW,
receiving a grand prize ribbon and an awards check for $200.00.

Jacob Reeves, senior at WHS, has submitted his application to the Arts Partnership of
Spartanburg for the Mary Wheeler Davis county art scholarship. I have my fingers crossed.
Martin Sanchez, a WHS student last year, won the scholarship in 2006.

JULY 04 - CONGRATULATIONS to all AP Art students for the terrific job they
did last school year on their portfolios! We had a tremendous number of
students receive college credit for their year in art last year, with 100%
passing in two of the three art AP's and 80% passing in the third! This is
just one more measure of the terrific job our students at WHS do every day
with their hard work! WOW!

NOVEMBER 2003 FOCUS ON YOUTH Exhibit at Spartanburg Art Museum
The WHS art department is very proud to announce that the following
students had 15 works accepted to the Spartanburg Artist Guilds "Focus on
Youth" Exhibit. Only 34 works were accepted to the show from all of
Spartanburg County High Schools, and we have 15 of that total number!!

Fall 2003 - NATIONAL AWARD RECOGNITION
The Woodruff High School art department was recognized this Fall 2003
by National Scholastic Arts as a DEPARTMENT OF NATIONAL EXCELLENCE. This
award goes to schools who have art students selected for award recognition
in the National Scholastic Arts Competition. After six student works were
honored as S.C. State Scholastic winners at Lander University, in June of
2003 WHS senior MAT ALEXANDER was honored in Washington, DC at the Corcoran
Gallery as one of two NATIONAL PORTFOLIO WINNERS from all of South
Carolina! We are so proud of Mat!
