I entered the field of public school teaching later than most people.
It is actually my third career, although my first two careers were also in
the field of education. I received my Masters in Early Childhood Education
from the University of South Carolina. I have been teaching kindergarten at
Woodruff Primary for twelve years. It is by far the most challenging career
I have had, but it is also the most rewarding. And I can certainly say that
I am never bored! Always tired, yes! But never, ever bored!
In kindergarten we teach all of the four basic subjects - language arts
(reading and writing), math, science, and social studies. While I enjoy
teaching each of these, my favorite is reading. It is such a wonderful
feeling to know that I have helped a child take the first steps in learning
to read. There is nothing like the look on the face of a child who has just
discovered that he/she can read!
I have many goals for my class, but the most important one is SAFETY.
I strive to create a safe, respectful, and material-rich environment so that
all students may learn and also develop self-control, self-esteem, and self-
reliance.
I love to work with children as they solve social problems, such as
cutting in line, name calling, taking turns, etc. At WPS we use "Conscious
Discipline," a program developed by Dr. Becky Bailey. Through this program
I help children learn to solve their problems with words and respect. It is
so rewarding to watch angry faces turn into smiling faces as students share
a handshake, a high five, or a pinky hug at the end of a problem solving
moment.
