How can I help my child learn to read?

As a parent, guardian, or loved one the most effective means to help little
children read is by reading to the child. This time can be made special by
holding the child in your lap. Show the child the front cover, the back
cover, the title of the book, the author of the book, and the illustrator of
the book. First, look at the pictures in the book and make guesses about
what you will read in the story. This is called making a prediction. Now,
begin to read the story by pointing to each word as you read. After reading
the story go back to your prediction. Was your prediction correct? Talk
about how your prediction was correct or different than the story.

Of course, particular books become favorites of children and they will want
you to read them over and over again. That's fine! Soon your child will
read the pictures in the book and eventually remember the words as well. A
book in your child's hands is the best way to introduce the pleasure of
reading and that will lead to your child reading, too!
