Parents,
We will have several ways that your children can be motivated to read this
year. You might want to talk with your child and your child's teacher to
determine which way that you think would work great for your child.
Students can participate in any or all programs.
We will continue with the Accelerated Reader Program, a computerized program
that allows students to read on their level and take quizzes after they read
a book. They earn points for the questions that they get correct.
Book-It is a program sponsored by Pizza Hut that rewards students with a
personal pan pizza if they read a certain number of books. This number is
determined by goals set in your child's classroom. A Preschool Book-It
Program will begin later in the year.
Terrier Tales is a program sponsored by Wofford and the Spartanburg County
Public Library. Students go to the public library, ask for a bookmark, read
5 books and fill in the information on the bookmark, and then take the
bookmark back to the public library to be stamped. This becomes their free
ticket to a Wofford football or basketball game. After the initial
bookmark, Wofford will send out bookmarks for additional tickets. Parents
may attend with students for the price of a student ticket. I have asked
that our students who participate bring their bookmark to school also, so
that I can track how many of our students are taking advantage of
this. For more information you can call 864-597-4090 or visit their website
at
http://www.woffordterriers.com.
USC will also give away tickets to their lady basketball games as they recognize readers. These promotions emphasize a character trait. We will participate in Reading Heroes Part II, which emphasizes Health and Nutrition. Parents will keep a log (supplied by the school) of the number of pages that your child reads between December 14th and December 26th. All books read must be on the appropriate grade level. The form must be returned by January 5, 2010. Vouchers for a free ticket for the student and one free ticket for the parent (additional tickets are $3.00 at the gate) will be issued at school for the January 17, 2010, South Carolina vs. Auburn game at 3 p.m. So get ready to read over the holidays and enjoy a basketball game.
*Note: Be sure to send in your log on our first day back at school.
Reading Heroes Part III will focus on Literacy and Education. The reading logs will need to document the number of BOOKS read (not pages) between January 4th and January 15th. The forms need to be turned in to Mrs. Brown by January 19th. The game will be on February 14, 2010, when South Carolina plays Arkansas at 3 p.m. Happy Valentine's Day!
Winners will be recognized throughout both games.
HEALTH AND NUTRITION PRIZES: The HIGHEST readers from EACH GRADE K-5 will receive: certificates, health gift packs (athletic bags with bottled water, t-shirt, towel, pamphlet), autographed basketball and autographed Women's Basketball poster.

they could turn in their bookmark for a free ice cream. The participating

SC Picture Book Award Lists should be in your child's homework folder. Please encourage your child to mark off the books and make notes about which books he/she really likes. We have already started
talking about these books and have read several. The voting will take place in February. This list will be helpful in keeping track of what has been read and which books still need to be read.
