Literature Bags

Literature Bags

Literature Bags are themed bags that contain children's literature as well as activities and games related to the theme. Children take these bags home for several nights at a time. These bags are not homework, but simply a way to help them enjoy reading, want to read, and therefore become better readers. They also provide families with new reading material and activities to enjoy together.

Thank you to the talented parents of my 2002-2003 class, who so graciously designed the bags for me, especially Derrie and Cheryl!

Teachers Interested in Using Literature Bags in Their Classrooms - Read This!

I've had a lot of inquiries about my literature bags and am glad other teachers are interested in this idea. My grant was for $400, but this project could be completed for much more or much less. The biggest expense to the project is books, so if you can use books you already have in your classroom that would save a lot of money. Unfortunately, I do not have the grant I wrote for this project saved on the computer. This was the first grant I wrote and, believe it or not, it was handwritten! However, you can visit the site that I "borrowed" this idea from and see a sample of the grant that inspired mine. http://www.kinderkorner.com/discoverypacks.html

This teacher created her "discovery packs" for kindergarten, so I did have to adapt a lot. I hope this helps you get started with your own literature bag project in your classroom. Good luck!
