This year 2nd grade is teaching math based on RIT groups! Once fall MAP testing is complete, students will be grouped by their RIT scores for math lessons. Since RIT scores vary by each unit, children may have a different teacher for each math unit. Using RIT scores, we hope that students' specific needs are addressed.

RIT Grouping

RIT Band Groups for 2nd Grade begin on Monday, October 27. After this date, students will begin switching teachers for math for the remainder of the year. We will place students into math classes according to their RIT Band Levels from MAP Testing. This will ensure that each teacher is able to focus on the specific weaknesses and strengths of students in his/her group.

Math Homework will be assigned by your child's RIT Band Group Math Teacher. The homework will be sent home as a "Math Homework Packet" to be worked on throughout the unit. This homework will be due back to the RIT Band Teacher near the end of the unit and will be graded for completion.

Math Menus

Our second grade team developed Math Menus during the summer to correlate with each of our math units. These menus provide students with a choice of activities to complete as early finisher activities to ensure that all students are constantly working on and improving their math skills for the current unit.

Every Day Counts Calendar Math

Calendar math is held for the first 10-15 minutes of our math block. This is a time when students are reviewing and previewing math skills such as telling time, counting money, graphing, facts, patterns, and more! You can find out more about Everyday Counts Calendar Math at their website. In our classroom, we conduct calendar lessons on our Promethean Board.

Since posting these pictures, I have received many emails from teachers across the country wondering if I would be willing to share my Promethean flipcharts for Everday Calendar Math. Unfortunately, I am unable to share these, as they were not created by me. My district paid teachers to create these for the district's use. I hope they give you an idea of how you can use this software to create similar ones to use. Once you create one month, you can use the same pages for many months! :)

During our addition and subtraction, regrouping, and multiplication & division units, we use LOTS of math games to get students fluent with their math facts. When they play games, they forget that they're even practicing their math facts, but become fluent very quickly!

We also use a lot of hands-on exploration to help students visualize math concepts. The big focus on computations in 2nd grade is that students understand the concept before building fluency.

Shawn uses kissables to show the equation, 5x3=15. Dominick uses a Hershey bar to build an array for 2x5=10.

After each Computations Unit, students will be ready to prove their fluency of basic addition and subtraction facts. Being fluent with the facts will help students as we move on to adding two and three-digit numbers in the future. To prove fluency, students will "Pop Through Their Math Facts." We will keep track of student progress on a bulletin board. Once all students have mastered a fact, the class will be treated to a popcorn party! Students use this site to prove their fluency....use it to practice at home!

During our Place Value unit, students practice their estimating skills using goldfish crackers. Our class also took a "field trip" to the hall to make post-it estimations for Mrs. Cones' students' estimation pictures.

During our Measurement Unit, students have hands-on practice with measurement tools such as rulers, yardsticks, balances, scales, and more! To celebrate our learning, we end the unit with a Measurement Olympics where students compete in events and use their measuring skills to record their distances in each event.

During our Money Unit, students will be asked to bring in a bag of real coins. These coins will be used in daily activities so students can have hands-on practice with actual coins. Students will play games to learn to identify coins, make change, and solve money-related problems!

During our Geometry Unit, students will explore plane shapes and solid shapes. They will learn to identify the number of faces, edges, and vertices of solid shapes, as well as to explain if they roll or slide. Students will explore combining and dividing shapes, as well as identifying lines of symmetry. Hands-on activities, games, and songs will be used to help students understand shapes all around them!

During our Time Unit, students will learn to tell time to the nearest 5-minutes. Students will explore solving problems with elapsed time.

We create and use "peek-a-boo" clocks during our time unit. These are clocks made from two paper plates. The top plate has the clock face with numbers written in red. These numbers are cut so that they lift to show the minute numbers (written on the bottom plate) in blue. The hands of the clock are bobby pins (one small and one large) spray painted red (hour hand) to match the numbers on the clock face and blue (minute hand) to match the numbers underneath the flap. These clocks are great for kinesthetic and visual learners! Later, we move on to using regular clocks in the classroom, and take these home to use for extra practice there.

During our Data Analysis Unit, students will explore graphing and probability. Students will form their own survey questions, conduct surveys, gather data using charts, and show results using various types of graphs, including bar graphs and pictographs. Students will also explore the concepts of probability and trends in data.

Quality Tools

Our school is a Baldridge School. We use quality tools to collect data in all subject and social areas. Each child keeps a data binder to track his/her own individual progress. We also have classroom graphs and charts to track our progress as a class. We're always trying to be at our ALL TIME BEST!
