What are anchor club partners?

The Anchor Club is a group of junior and senior students at Cleveland High
School. They have to meet grade and behavior qualifications to join this
club. They partner with our second graders and write letters to our
students each week. We write back to them. Several times a year we get
together. They come to our school to visit and read with our students.
They hold an Christmas party and a Spring Carnival for our students.

What can I do to help my child prepare for the TCAP test?

Read with your child. Practice addition and subtraction with regrouping.
Go over work sent home that was done in class. Encourage your child to pay
attention in class. On test days, be sure your child gets a good night's
sleep and a good breakfast. I tell the children that TCAP is a time
to "Show off" all that they have learned. I keep it low keyed so they do
not stress out. Don't make them anxious about the test. Just tell them to
try their best and not to worry if some things seem hard. Tell them to pick
what they think is the best answer and go on.

What is DIBELS?

DIBELS is a test your child takes 3 times a year to check his/her fluency.
This is the rate at which they read a grade level passage that they have
never seen before. At the beginning of the year they should be able to read
42 words per minute and by the end of the year they should be able to read
90 words per minute.

What should I do if I want to set up a meeting?

Send a note with your child letting the teacher know when you are available
or giving a number where you can be reached. My planning time this year is
from 12:00 to 1:00. This is a good time to call or set up a meeting. I
am not available on Thurdsay's during this time due to grade level
meetings. I can also meet by previous arrangement after school most days.
Please do not just show up because I will most likely not be able to meet
with you then. If we have a meeting set up and you cannot attend or will be
late, please call to let me know.

May I eat lunch with my child?

Yes, just call or send in a note with your child letting me know the date
you wish to come and if you are going to be purchasing a lunch for
yourself. We eat lunch from 11:25 to 11:55. When you arrive at school,
check-in at the office and they will let me know you are here.

May I send in treats for my child's birthday?

Yes. Please contact me in advance to set this up. Good items are bakery
cupcakes, Little Debbie's or cookies. If you bring drinks, little juice box
drinks are great.

May I Volunteer?

Yes, we have a parent coordinator who handles this. In most cases, teachers
send work up to the Parent Resource center for the volunteers to work on.
Your help is appreciated.

May I visit my child's classroom?

Yes. Unless we have a meeting scheduled, I will not be able to conference
with you, but you may come in and observe. It would be best to set up a time
with me in advance to make sure your child in in the classroom and not in a
seperate classroom for Reading or in Lab for Successmaker. When you arrive
at school you will need to check-in in the office and get a visitor's pass.
They will then call me and let me know you have arrived.
