What do I do with my child's weekly envelope?

First, review last week's work with your child. Talk about your child's
strengths, areas for improvement, and grades. Remove all the loose papers
from the envelope; these can be kept at home. Next, read this week's
newsletter (DO NOT DETACH IT FROM THE PACKET!) Sign where directed at the top
of the newsletter, and cut off the bottom portion of the newsletter. Keep
this at home for future reference. Return the stapled packet in the envelope.

How do spelling words work?

Each week on Monday (or Tuesday if there is a holiday), the children will be
given a pre-test on the week's words. Pre-tests do not "count"in my grade
book. The basic list almost always contains 15 words. Your child's score on
the pre-test will determine whether or not he/she will have "personal words".
Each child has a special list of personal words. These are words that they
have spelled incorrectly in their writing. For example, Susie might
consistently spell the word 'because'incorrectly. This would be a word on her
personal word list. Here's how personal words are assigned after the pre-test.
   1. If your child gets 100% on the pre-test, he/she does not have to take
the basic word test on Friday. Instead, he/she will be given 5 personal
words. These will be the only words he/she will be tested on during Friday's
test.
   2. If a child gets between 1 and 4 words incorrect, he/she will still take
the basic word test on Friday. However, he/she will also be responsible for
personal words. If the child misses 1 basic word, he/she gets 4 personal
words; if the child misses 2 basic words he/she gets 3 personal words, etc.
   3. If a child misses 5 or more basic words, he/she will not recieve
personal words and will focus on the basic words for the week.

*Children are also tested on dictation sentences on Friday. These sentences
contain basic words plus other third grade appropriate words.

How often do you place a book order?

I try to place an order once a month, but I gauge this on the enthusiasm of
the class. If a class is anxious to order, I will place an order once a
month. If a class isn't as excited about ordering, I will not order as often.

What is the discipline policy in your class?

The discipline policy centers on respect - respect for others, respect for
self, and respect for property. When respect is violated, there are natural
consequences and a loss of privileges.

Each week the students will start with 10 minutes of extra recess, which will
be awarded on Friday afternoon. The student's job is to keep their extra
recess. the students will lose minutes of extra recess for the following
infractions:
   1. For each night of incomplete homework, 2 minutes will be docked.
   2. For each classroom rules infraction, 1 minute will be docked.
