Meet Your Teacher

My name is Lisa Rand. Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees are from
Tennesseee Tech University. I began teaching in 1996 at Tennessee Tech
University. While at TTU, I taught the "Reading Methods for Elementary
Majors", "Children's Literature for Elementary Majors," and was the Director
of the America Reads program. In 2004, I taught part-time in 2nd grade at
Capshaw and part-time at TTU. In 2005, I began teaching 2nd grade full
time. In 2006, I moved to 4th grade and love it also. Teaching at each of
these levels has been very rewarding.

In my free time, I enjoy bargain shopping, antique hunting, reading, and
watching my daughter ride horses. I also collect Longaberger baskets and
once had the opportunity to make a Longaberger basket. You might also see me
at the YMCA.

As a family we love to visit historical places when we have the opportunity.
Tennessee has many wonderful sites that are free to visit. We also try to take
some type of family trip each year outside of Tennessee. Here is a list of
some of our favorite places outside of Tennessee we have visited that are
great for fourth graders to visit:

***Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown
***The Discovery Space Shuttle launch in Florida
***Appomatox Court House, Virginia where Lee surrendered to Grant
***D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia
***Chicago - Sears Tower, The Field Museum, and The American Girl Store

Several years ago, a dream came true when a book that I helped to write was
published. The book, "Tenneessee Tales the Textbooks Don't Tell" (authored
by Jennie Ivey, Calvin Dickinson, and Lisa Rand) is a book consisting of 18
chapters of Tennessee history for both children and adults. In April 2006,
our second book, "E is for Elvis" was released nation-wide. I will encourage
students in my class to write every opportunity they get. We will work on
style and content this year.

Fourth grade is a wonderful time in a child's life. I hope that you will
love being a special member of our class this year. Please know that my door
is always open to your family.

Our class motto is, "The more you read, the better you read." We have a
cheer that we say which stresses and reinforces our motto. I believe that
teaching children to be better readers and helping them develop a love for
reading are the most important parts of my job.

Our class name is "Rand's Ruminators." We have this name because I want
every child to develop the ability to think critically and creatively.
