For the week of December 14-18, 2009: Our classroom will be a flurry
of learning and special activities during this last week!
During the holidays, please have your child do 2 things each day: 1.read a
picture book or one chapter of a chapter book and 2. count your pocket
change. If you will practice these two things, your child will come back
fresh and ready to move on in 2010! Thanks!!!
Daily Language--Week 17. We begin each morning at 8:00 with Daily Language.
Please make sure your child is ON TIME so they don't get behind. This lesson
covers MANY language skills for 2nd grade. Our Daily Language quizzes
will usually be given on Friday. Each quiz will consist of several of the
sentences and examples done in class during that week. You can help your
child prepare by reviewing the weekly sheet sent home each Thursday. No quiz
this Friday--practice only this week.

MATH: We will work on Chapter 7: Plane Shapes. This is usually an easy one
for the students so we will move quickly on shapes, congruent shapes, and
symmetry before the holiday break.
Remember to study for the -9 SUBTRACTION FAST FACTS quiz for WEDNESDAY,
December 16.
Many children did VERY WELL on the 100 Fast Facts Addition test. If
yours did not, practice is the only answer. The more you practice, the faster
you get. :-)
We will periodically have UNANNOUNCED quizzes on these addition facts. Keep
reviewing at home.

READING: We will go back to our reading book this week with the story:
Pumpkin Fiesta. The focus skills are vocabulary, making predictions, and
sequencing events.
ALL STUDENTS NEED TO BE READING WITH A PARENT AT HOME EVERY NIGHT TO BUILD
THEIR READING SKILLS.

SPELLING: This week we will focus on words with the -s, -es, and -ies spelling
patterns. Our spelling test will be given on THURSDAY. The bonus
word will be "holidays".
Please help your child study these words at home each night as needed.

ENGLISH/WRITING: We will be working on sentence parts--subjects and
predicates. We will continue to review nouns and verbs all year. We will
also do Journal writing.

Science: Chapter 11: Simple machines: We will study forces and machines
during this week. We will do many activities in class. On Monday, we will go
to Logan's Lab with Mrs. Burk to learn more about simple machines. Please
read lessons at home with your child as time allows.
We will begin with magnets after the holidays.
