How do I use my child's reading vocabulary folder?

Go over the words for the story checked for that week. Be sure to vary the
order. Ask your child to make up sentences using the words. Be sure to
review the words your child has already had periodically.

My child hates to study the spelling words. How can I help him in a fun way?

Try to make it fun. Here are some things you can try. Ask your child to
show you how we spell the spelling words using sign language. He may not
remember how to make every letter yet, but he'll sure be thinking about the
letters!
Play "Hangman" with your child to let him guess the spelling word. If he
guesses it before you finish spelling the word, have him supply the remaining
letters. Get a plastic place mat and some shaving cream and have your child
write the words in shaving cream. One mom told me she let her daughter spell
the words outside on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk. Fun!

Does my child need to do the back of the Saxon Phonics sheet?

No, but it would be good if you would ask your child to read the words on
the back of the sheet to see if he caught onto the phonics skill for that
lesson. We review everyday; but if your child is unable to read the words
on the back, let me know so that I can plan some extra help.

How will my child be graded in first grade?

The first grade report card has been modified, but not as much as teachers
were led to believe. We will still have grades based upon percentages of
graded items. The scale is:
               E (Excellent) 93% - 100%
               G (Good) 85% - 94%
               S (Satisfactory) 75% - 84%
               N (Needs Improvement) 70% - 74%
               U (Unsatisfactory) Below 70%
