![]() Sight Words 1st BookIf first grade we often seem to focus on phonics and sounding out words, but there are also words that your child must learn by sight. They should have already begun learning these last year in kindergarten , and this year the list will quickly grow and grow. I want to be sure that your child has every opportunity to master these words. Each child will get instruction for 5 weeks on a set of words, then be tested the 6th week. Some of them will be covered in our Reading series, others in our Phonics and Spelling lessons. Students should say all the words automatically by sight without the teacher's help. The best way is to put each word on a blank index card and quiz them like flash cards. These are high frequency words and cannot be sounded out. A fluent reader will read without pausing to sound out words and practice is the only way to build fluency. Here are sight words 1: Sam Come Back: on, way, in Big Blue Ox: help, get, use A Fox and a Kit: this, her, too, eat Get the Egg: saw, tree, your, small Animal Park: home, many, them, into Phonics sight words: the, said, of, do, into, who, you, your, color, what, from, are, friend, their, there, come, some, does, goes ![]() |
