If I am sick, how do I make up my work?

Shelby County policy applies in this situation. (You can find a copy of
that policy in the school office or in the SCS handbook.) Basically it states
that you have as many days to make up your work as you were out sick.
CMS's policy states that parents should not call the school for homework.
Check the teacher's web site for lessons, homework, and other information if a
student is absent. Use the "I Was Absent" book in Mrs. Chiulli's classroom.

How do I receive my make up work?

It is YOUR responsibility to check the "I Was Absent" notebook, to check the
web site, and/or ask the teacher for your make up work. If you do not ask
for your make up work , or if you do not turn in missing assignments, your
grade will result in a zero.
In fact, when you are absent, an "ab" is marked in the roll book or grade book.
An "ab" enters on Powerschool as a zero. When you make up the work, the "ab"
or the zero will change to the grade you make on the work.

Do I have to read Accelerated Reader?

Yes. CMS has bought the AR program for all teachers and
students to utilize, and Mrs. Warren expects Language Arts classes to
participate in the program. AR counts as a graded activity in reading
classes. Students and parents have a contract detailing AR deadline dates, AR
points required each nine weeks, and consequences for not completing AR goals.
AR reading time will also be made available during some block times of
English classes.

Is extra credit available?

Extra credit is given on the web site each night. It is not hard to do. It
increases communication between the teacher, the student, and the parent
because the parent is required to sign the extra credit. The extra credit
tends to be a review of that day's lesson, so it serves as a good review.
Also, the extra credit activity sometimes involves events that are happening
at school, lessons from class, announcements about upcoming deadlines, etc.
Students should not wait until the end of the grading period to decide that
they need extra credit!

What is a good way to pick out books to read for AR?

This web site has been the greatest lifesaver for teachers. What is amazing
is that it is the first Book Search tool that will create individualized
reading lists for students based on their interests, reading ability,
and age level. For the first time, we can type in a student's Lexile,
age or grade level, interests, genre of book, and receive an appropriate
reading list. For example, if a second grader reads at a 9th grade
level, ONLY the 9th grade level books that are appropriate for 2nd
graders would come back in the list. Another amazing feature is that a
student can type in the name of a favorite book and then tell the Book
Wizard they want another book that is similar in genre and style as well
as whether they want it to be easier or harder than the one they've read
and it will return a reading list for them.

How can I check my child's grades?

Each student is required to keep a grade sheet for my reading class and
English class in his/her notebook. The grade sheet should be kept current.
It should match the master grade sheet that is posted in the classroom.
Grades will also be posted on line through PowerSchool. Parents and students
each have a code to use to access the PowerSchool site. Codes may be obtained
from the CMS office.

How do I figure up my average in English?

Each department at CMS decides how grades for each subject area will be
determined.
The Language Arts department decided that for English and for reading:
homework will count as 10% of the grade, daily work and class participation
will count as 10% of the grade, quizzes as 30%, and tests/projects as 50% of
the grade.
The Science department decided that for science:
homework will count as 10% of the grade, daily work and class participation
will count as 20% of the grade, quizzes as 30%, and tests/projects as 40% of
the grade.
Students have been taught in the math classes how to figure these percentages
to look at a final grade.
In MY classes, if a student or a parent catches an error that I have made in
entering the grades, the student will earn extra credit points!
