Math
*Multiplication-Congratulations to all of the students who have memorized all
of their multiplication facts through 12X12!!! The students have done great!
Please keep studying at home. Even if your child has passed all of their
facts, they still need constant review at home with flash cards. We will be
moving on to division really soon!
*Measurement- After Christmas, we will begin to study measurement in math. I
feel like some of the standards may be difficult for the students. I wanted
to share some of these standards with you so that you can begin practicing
with them at home.
Recognize the use of fractions in liquid measurements
Recognize the relationship between cups, pints, quarts, and gallons
Estimate and/or measure the capacity of a container
Measure weight to the nearest ounce or gram
Use reasonable units of length (kilometer, meter, centimeter, mile,
yard, foot, inch) in estimates and measures.
Know: 1 meter=100 cm, 1 yard=3 feet, 1 foot =12 inches
Make and record measurements that use mixed units within the same
system of measurement (such as feet and inches, meters and centimeters)
Use common abbreviations: km, m, cm, in, ft, yd, mi.
Develop strategies for solving problems involving addition and
subtraction of measurements
These are things that you can discuss with them while cooking in the kitchen,
measuring something in the house, etc.
Scholastic Book Order
The Scholastic book order magazine has been sent home. I will be placing the
order on Friday, November 20. The order will be here in time for Christmas.
Handwriting
The students have been working hard on cursive handwriting. Right now, the
spelling test is optional if they want to write in cursive. After Christmas,
the students will have to be writing in cursive. Please have them practice
writing their spelling words in cursive at home.
Items needed
These are some items needed for the classroom:
*pencils- we are running out
*yard stick- if you have a yard stick that you do not use, I could use it in
the classroom
*any item that you feel will help me with the measurement standards
(containers, measuring cups, measuring spoons, tape measure, etc.)
