How can I know how my child is doing in math each six weeks?

Each student should have a math folder. This folder contains all
the notes,
assignments, worksheets, quizes, and tests for the six weeks.
The folder
also contains a Record of Achievement where the student records
all the
grades taken during that grading period. These papers are kept
in the
folder until the end of the sixth weeks grading period. At the
end of the
grading period each student organizes and returns the papers in
the folder
for a grade. These I keep until the end of the year and then
they are
returned to the student to use for final test review.

Do you drop the lowest grade each six weeks?

No. I give between 15 and 20 different grades during each
grading period.
If a student has one or two low grades, usually the average is
not affected a
great deal. Bonus points are often given as a part of an
assignment, quiz,
or test.
