Grading and Rules & Regs

East High School Mr. Long

Grading Policy/Rules & Materials

Chemistry/ Biology

Most tests may be retaken within 1and a 1/2 weeks after school and I will count the higher grade.

Attendance - Attendance is required and expected everyday. Full class participation is required and expected everyday. If a student does not attend class properly or participate properly this will have an impact on his or her grade. If a grading curve is needed at the end of the six weeks, it is based on attendance, participation, and tests. A student with excellent attendance and good participation rarely fails class. It is strongly recommended that a student not miss any more than six days in a six weeks (fewer if on block scheduling), since this was the old bench mark for automatic failure in the past. Excused/Unexcused Absences - A school sponsored activity approved by the principal is an excused absence. If a student is absent from class for any other legitimate reason - personal illness, death or serious illness in the immediate family, validated court appearance, or recognized religious holiday, then a note should be brought from the parent or guardian. If a student does not have an excused admit slip or parental note for any absence then it should be considered unexcused. Sometimes I verify notes for absences from parents by calling them.

Make-Up Work - For any absence, work or tests may be made up in a reasonable period of time. Tests/quizzes may be made up in the afternoon after school. Tutoring is also after school. Generally speaking, make-up work should be completed within a week. No make-up work is accepted the last week of the six weeks. If a student has extended excused absences, a longer time may be allowed. For any work that is considered late by the teacher, if it is even accepted, points will be deducted.

Notebook - . A three ring notebook with pockets may be required to keep all lecture, lab material, as well as student work. Everything should be arranged by date and organized according to the teachers’ directions.

Homework - Homework will be assigned every six weeks to supplement classroom teaching. It must be turned in promptly when due.

Tests & Quizzes - are periodically given during the six weeks.

Lab Activities - will occur each six weeks to help reinforce content material.

Projects - During different six weeks periods and in different classes, projects may be required that count towards the grade.

Grades are determined from a mixture of the following: academic average from tests and quizzes, daily work and notes, class participation, notebook, homework, and sometimes a project. If a grading curve is used, it will depend on the difficulty of the material covered that six weeks.

Extra Credit - is offered each six weeks in the form that most tests or quizzes may be retaken in the next week after school in the time offered, except during the last part of the six weeks.

Recommendation - to any student that does not have 20/20 vision, please see an optometrist for a good pair of glasses. For a child to learn, proper vision is a necessity.

Students need to conduct themselves in accordance with the policies mentioned.

Parents should examine grades, conduct, attendance, and comments on their child’s report card every six weeks.

If parents have any concerns you can call me at 416-6160 and schedule an appointment or talk to me.
