Grading and Assessment
I use the point system for grading. Quizzes and homework assignments, quick
writes, notebook checks, and so forth count from 10 to 50 points. Major tests,
papers, and projects count 100 points.
Classroom participation
Your rapt attention in this classroom is crucial to your being successful in this
class. Our class time is shorter this year, forty-five minutes, and that leaves no time
for nonsense. I will keep track daily of both positive and negative classroom
participation. At the end of the nine weeks, I will tally points gained and lost to
calculate your participation grade. This will be a 100-point grade. Again, this is a
chance for an easy grade.
Class Rules
sBe on time.
sSpeak appropriately.
sFood and drink should not enter this classroom. Bottled water is permissable.
sRespect others and their property.
sBe nice.
Late work
I do not accept class work and homework late. Period. If your homework is in
your locker, don’t think that I will let you go to get it. I won’t. Lucky for you these are
the 10- to 50-point grades.
I will accept major assignments up to one week late but at a cost of ten percent
per day. Try not to accumulate this deficit.
Absences
sIf you know you will be absent ahead of time, please see me and get your
assignments before
the absence.
sIf you are absent the day an assignment is due, then be sure you turn it in the
day you return.
sIf an assignment is made when you are absent, then refer to the school policy
for turning in work:
one day for every day you were absent. If you’ve had an extended illnes, I will
take it easy on you.
sYou may not make up quizzes or tests during class time. You may take them
after school or during lunch or Independent Study.
sIf you are absent because you are in ISS, grrgh, I will send work via email to Mr.
Allgood. It is up to you to get the notes or any other information from someone in
your class. Do not come to me for this information. To my way of thinking, you
should not be in ISS anyway. If a presentation is due on the day you are in ISS, woe be
to you.
Leaving the classroom
No. Don’t do it. I will not give you permission to leave the classroom unless I
determine that it is an
emergency.
Tardiness
Be on time. Class begins promptly at the ringing of the second bell. If you are
tardy three times within the nine-week period, I will notify your parents that upon the
fourth tardy, you will serve detention with me in the afternoon--no fewer than thirty
minutes and no more that sixty minutes. It won’t be pleasant, so try to avoid it at all
costs.
Welcome!
I’m looking forward to a great year with you. As I said earlier, American
literature is my passion, and I hope you will soon see why. I am approachable, so see
me if you have any concerns at any time throughout the year.

Classroom participation
Junior English is a different ballgame from Freshmen and Sophomore English.
More is presented to you and more is expected of you. You will no longer be studying
literature by genre. Junior English is the study of American literature, and next year in
Senior English you will be studying British literature. In other words, you’ve grown up!
American Literature is my passion, and I hope some of that will rub off on you. Your
