Mrs. Jones moved to Nasvhille in 1989 from Savannah, Georgia. While in
Savannah, she taught middle school music. Mrs. Jones was recognized as
as Teacher of the Year in 1980, while teaching at DeRenne Middle School, in
Savannah, Georgia.
In 1989, Mrs. Jones was afforded the opportunity of having students
perform in the nationally acclaimed movie production of "GLORY." The
students sang "My Country Tis of Thee." She also served as Music Director of
the Historic First African Baptist Church of Savannah, Georgia (The oldest
Negro Baptist Church in North America). Mrs. Jones is a published musician
and does occasional background vocals for new CD releases.
Mrs. Jones' first teaching position in Nasville was at Meigs Magnet Middle
School. Her students participated in state vocal events receiving superior
ratings in all events. She was named Teacher of the Year at Meigs in 1996.
Mrs. Jones moved to East Literature Magnet School in 1997, where she taught
middle and high school music, led with another teacher vibrant African
American History month celebrations and brought innovative ideas to the
program of activities at the school. The Harambee Dance Ensemble was
organized under her leadership in 1998-99 and has continued to grow annually
with students from various ethinc origins participating.
While teaching at the middle school (East), Mrs. Jones and her students
participated in a Nashville Chamber Orchestra music writing and recording
project: Kid Pan Alley. Mrs. Jones and her students composed two songs
which were included on the final project: "Download it All for Free"
and "True to Me." She was named Teacher of the Year at East Literature in
1997 and 2000. Mrs. Jones currently teaches in the High School Music
program.
Her students have participated in the Tennessee Jazz Association contests,
Solo and Ensemble, All-State, and Trills and Thrills Musical Fests.
Students perform community outreach. One year the choirs
were awarded a grant from "Kindred Spirits," to fund a Room In The Inn
outreach project. Other community service include a community benefit
program for Fannie Battle Day Home, nursing homes and Angel Tree
contributions.
Mrs. Jones co-wrote music curriculum and the middle school
exit exam in the late 1990's and served as an exhibitor at the TMEA
Convention in the early 1990's.
The Legacy Advanced Mix Ensemble and Mrs. Jones were awarded the Altruism
Award, Spring 2008. They received a $2,000.00 award for community outreach
through vocal performances and sharing acts of kindness with and for others.
The award stipulates that $1,000.00 be used to enhance the lives or
situations of others in the community during the 2008-09 school term. We
will purchase coats for kids this winter and donate $200.00 to Second
Harvest. Mrs. Jones and the Legacy Advanced Mixed Ensemble will use the
balance of the award to support the ensemble during the 2008-09 school term.
Choir students have performed for the National Association of African
American Educators, the Negro Veterans of World War II Annual Reunion, The
Urban League of Nashville, Metro Nashville Education Association, Metro
Nashville Education Minority Affairs Committee, numerous civic events, local
and out of county schools, and on Foxx 17. The East Nashville community
looks forward to their annual Sojourner's of Truth Tour. (February).
Mrs. Jones received her undergrad degree from Savannah State University, has
done course work at Georgia Southern University, Armstrong State College,
Trevecca Nazarene University and Cumberland University. She has a Master of
Arts in Education. Workshops and seminars include Tennessee State
University, Country Music Hall of Fame, and American Baptist Theological
Seminary, (to name a few).
She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi (Educator's Honor Society, Tennessee Music
Educator's Association, Nathional Education Association and the Music
Educator's National Conference. Since 1984, Mrs. Jones has concluded all
communications with "in perfect harmony," which is her desire for her
students, musically, and socially.
WELCOME
High school music students experience, appreciate and put into practice
skills, technique and knowledge discovered through the study of Music
History and Literature, Piano and Choir. Students extend experiences beyond
the classroom setting to expand knowledge acquisition, appreciation,
creativity and connect to other disciplines and life experiences, to
understand the relevance of music in their lives today and in the future.
