Unit Two – Anglo Saxon Literature (Weeks Three and Four)
- Beowulf and Grendel (Gardner)
- discussion day on Beowulf,
- lecture and notetaking on Anglo-Saxon culture from Elements of Literature.
- create individual outlines for an essay comparing and contrasting two
locations in the poem (final drafts will be turned in on Monday of the second
week)
- Anglo-Saxon kennings and shorter poems (from Elements of Literature) will
- discussion days on the philosophies in Grendel, as well as the adaptation
of the story for a modern audience.
- analyze and argue using textual details from both works, and to decide
which of theworks has more artistic and cultural value for its time
- craft a literary review of each work, wherein students urgereaders to
enjoy or avoid the literature, giving persuasive reasons.
