6th Grade Reading/Language Arts
1st Nine Weeks Syllabus

Class Description: The areas of Reading/Language Arts that will be covered 
in the sixth grade are Reading Content and Comprehension; Reading Techniques 
and Skills; Grammar and Mechanics; Vocabulary; Writing Process and 
Organization. Knowledge will be gained through the textbook, writing labs, 
technological sources, and Essential Literature. 

Areas Being Covered: Narration, Sentences, Nouns, Verbs, Writing Process, 
Literature

Standards to be covered:
•	Determine fact from fiction
•	Draw inferences
•	Locate and verify information to support opinions, predictions, and 
conclusions
•	Distinguish among various literary genres
•	Select summary statement and theme
•	Determine authors purpose
•	Determine main ideas of plot, their causes, how they influence 
future actions, and how they are resolved
•	Identify the correct use of nouns and verbs
•	Identify the correct use of commas
•	Use knowledge of root words, affixes, syllabication, and or spelling 
patterns as aides to determine meaning within context.
•	Select appropriate time-order or transitional words
•	Identify purpose for writing
•	Identify audience
•	Complete graphic organizers
•	Select methods to correct run-on sentences

Assessments:
Student progress toward the standards will be assessed through daily 
assignments, quizzes, tests, and activities. Quizzes may be announced or 
unannounced. A test will be given upon the conclusion of each unit of study.

Grading:
Grades will fall within these categories: classwork, homework, and test and 
quizzes. Any projects that are assigned will count as a test grade. Test and 
quizzes are counted twice.
