Classroom Rules
The student is expected to adhere to the following:
1. Be in class on time, prepared and in your assigned seat ready to learn.
2. No food or drinks.
3. Keep hands, feet, other body parts and objects to self.
4. Use kind words at all times.
5. Complete ALL work to the best of their ability.
Procedures and Comments
1. Students are to have ALL supplies (i.e. science book, notebook, paper,
pencil, homework, etc.) when they enter the room. Students will not be allowed to
return to their locker during class.
2. Pencils should be sharpened and trash thrown away before the tardy bell rings.
3. Students are to work on the “Bellringer” (board work) immediately after entering
room.
4. Book bags, purses, heavy coats, etc. should be left in lockers.
5. Absentee slips and notes should be given to the teacher at the beginning of class.
6. The teacher will dismiss class. You are to remain seated until that time.
7. Students should use the restroom during their break. Passes to the restroom during
class time will not be issued except in extreme emergencies. If you have a medical
problem and must frequently go to the restroom, please bring a doctor’s statement.
8. Students will remain quiet and attentive during school announcements.
9. Students are to be respectful of all individuals (i.e. teacher, peers, guests,
substitutes)
in my classroom. Only positive remarks are to be made in class.
10. During group or hands-on activities, the students will follow all instructions given by
the
teacher. The noise level will remain at a minimal level and your area will remain
clean.
11. When I am teaching or another student is speaking (with permission), all students
should be attentive and on-task. Talking without permission will not be tolerated.
12. In case of fire drills or tornado drills, EVERY student will remain QUIET and follow
all of the teacher’s instructions. Stay with our class only and be prepared for roll
call
once we reach our designated area.
13. Classwork is assigned daily. This may include reading, studying or taking notes,
participating in discussions or lab work, answering questions or solving problems.
Any classwork not finished in class should be completed as homework.
14. Homework is due at the beginning of the period. Homework not in class on time
will be given a zero. *Refer to Make-Up Work Policy.
15. Homework or classwork grades below 70% can and should be corrected for
additional points. Corrections have to be made within two days of receiving the
graded paper. *Refer to the policy posted in the classroom.
16. All assignments will be placed in a designated area of the classroom.
17. Papers will be labeled with name, assignment, date, period and notebook section
or
points will be deducted. Papers without names will be thrown away.
18. ALL classwork, homework, etc. should be included in the appropriate section of the
notebook.
19. Make-up work due to an absence is YOUR responsibility. This work should be
completed and turned in within 5 days of your return. Work will be supplied if
requested. If a student is suspended, his/her work may not be available the day the
student is suspended. *Refer to the 8th Grade Team policy.
20. If you are going to miss any or all of class because of field trips, band practice,
sports, it is your responsibility to check with the teacher before that class. You are
responsible for any work missed during that period unless otherwise informed.
21. Cheating will not be tolerated. Students are to work independently on their work
unless instructed differently. Talking will not be allowed during testing periods.
Cheating will be punished by an automatic zero with no make-up work allowed.
Parents will be notified if cheating persists.
22. Each student will be required to write our daily objective and homework
assignment
in their planner each day. If there is no homework assignment, then the students
will
be required to summarize what was accomplished during that class period.
Planners
will be periodically checked and students will receive points for completing this
task.
23. The student will sign the tardy sheet, which is located next to the door each time
he/she
is tardy. The ELMS tardy policy will be followed to help eliminate interruptions in the
learning/teaching environment. Please refer to the policy in the handbook.
24. Remember: Learning is your responsibility!
Grading Policy
Each student will be required to keep a science notebook throughout the school year
which will contain ALL work that the student has completed (i.e. class notes, tests,
quizzes, classwork, homework, lab reports, journal activities, etc.). The notebook will
be divided into appropriate sections for organizational purposes. Students will be
graded and tested over the material contained within their notebook.
Tests/Notebook/Quizzes 30%
Classwork/Homework 40%
Lab Activities/Participation/Projects 30%
Hands-On Science
A supply list will be provided to each student during the first week of school. A Science
Lab Fee will be charged to help purchase materials for labs and hands-on activities to
be performed in the classroom. Every student and parent will be asked to sign a safety
contract. This contract is to help ensure that all labs are safe and successful for all
those involved. Students will not be permitted to participate in any lab or hands-on
activity without this contract signed and returned.
Projects
There will be approximately one project assigned each six weeks. Students may or
may not have class time to work on projects, so planning is essential! Many projects
assigned may require the use of the internet. If you do not have access to the internet
at home, access is available in the school library, the public library across the street
from ELMS, as well as in all Nashville Public Libraries. Work that contains material that
has been copied and pasted from the internet will not be accepted. Students will be
notified in plenty of time of the requirements and due date for each project.
Science Textbook Resources
The science textbooks have an enormous amount of information and useful resources
for our students. Each student will be able to access the textbook on-line and
participate in various tutorials and activities above and beyond what we will be
covering in class. There are also several website links that will be highlighted in the
textbook which will be an additional resource to make sure we have a successful and
productive year. The following page includes a brief description of some of the on-line
