2007 - 2008
Dear Families and Students,
I am so happy to welcome you back to the 2007 - 2008 school year, and trust
you had a great summer. For some of you, this will not only be a new year;
but a new school. I, especially, extend to you a sincere and warm welcome
to ELM .
Chemistry I, Honors Chemistry, and Science Research have a separate list of
supplies and fee requirements. The Lab Safety requirements remain stable in
the three classes. On lab days all students MUST have their latex gloves
and wear CLOSED toed shoes for safety purposes. You will not be able to
participate in lab for that day, if not dressed properly. It is best to
remember this always, so you don’t have to attend a make-up lab. Chemistry
I and Honors Chemistry fees will remain at $20.00 per student with Science
Research being $25.00. Lab fees are the only financial requirement I ask
of you, collectively. The ELM Science Faculty has always upheld not to do
any fund raisers. However, the consistency of financial support since ELM
graduated its first class of six students in 1997 has allowed the science
program to flourish. ELM could not continue the level of excellence in
science education provided you in lab training without this support.
This is my second of three years as a National Teaching Fellow through the
United States Department of Energy. I will continue to interface
nanoscience by students reducing the compound, HAuCl4, into gold colloidal
nanoparticles. This will require unique purchases not yet used in our
labs. Additionally, I will once again sponsor the ELM Tennessee Science
Bowl Team to go to Knoxville to compete in 2008. Last year was the first
year we were invited and received full scholarships for all participants.
We went into the final rounds winning over the 2006 champions, Chattanooga’s
McCalle High School, and finally coming in 14th out of 51 teams. This was
amazing as we received our invitation and scholarship on January 13th, 2007
and competed on February 24th, 2007. Most teams had been practicing since
the beginning of the school year. Our students worked tenaciously in their
six weeks prior to the event. They were awesome. I will put in for another
scholarship opportunity. Come join the team, if you want. Eagles soar!
If lab fees present ANY financial hardship because of circumstances in your
family, please, let me know. I will work with you on an individual basis;
but once again, be sure to let me know. I want a great lab experience for
each of you!
I look forward to continuing to serve ELM students and community this year,
as always. If you have any questions, you can contact me readily in three
ways:
1. jeanine.siebold@mnps.org ;
2. Mrs. Siebold @ Teacherweb.com ; or
3. Leave a message on my ELM voice mail by dialing 262-6947, Ext 1406.
Have a great 2007 - 2008 school year! Once again, anything I can do to help
you, please, do not hesitate to let me know.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Siebold
