Dear Families and Students,
I am happy to welcome you back to the 2009 - 2010 school year. For
some, this will be a new school. I extend to you a sincere welcome to ELM.
Biology I/Chemistry I, and Honors Chemistry have a separate list of
supplies and fees from AP Chemistry. The Lab Safety requirements are
identical in all levels. On lab days all chemistry students, regardless of
level MUST have latex gloves and wear CLOSED toed shoes to be in
compliance. If not appropriately attired, please, be reminded that you will
not be able to participate; and will have to attend a make-up lab after
school. The 1st Day of School Lab has been designed to be an exception.
Biology I students will wear thin, hospital latex gloves that I will supply.
Biology I, Chemistry I and Honors Chemistry students pay $20.00 with AP
Chemistry students paying $25.00. There is a breakage fee for hand blown
glassware, such as burrets which run $80.00. Students are asked to pay a
third of the total cost to help defray expenses, as well as, needless
breakage. Regular glassware breakage fees run from $1.00 - $10.00 depending
on type or we could not continue the level of excellence in science
education provided in lab training without this support.
Chemistry I and Honors Chemistry students will be taught in a college
preparatory manner with a focus on their ACT and SAT scores. Biology I
students will, also, be taught in a college prep manner with their focus
being on the State of Tennessee Biology Gateway Exam. Passing this is
necessary for graduation. In the past my students have scored very well. I
am looking forward to this class far exceeding previous records. All state
conceptual strand inquiry objectives and standards will be used in Chemistry
I, Honors Chemistry, and Biology I in order to achieve in this vein. AP
Chemistry is considered the most difficult AP lab course for college credit
with 22 labs. The ELM Tennessee Science Bowl Team weekend trip to Knoxville
will occur in February of 2010 to participate in this state academic bowl
competition. We are anticipating scholarships for every member of the team
again. Last year ELM placed in the top ten schools of the state.
If lab fees present ANY financial hardship for your family; please, let
me know. I will work with you on an individual basis.
I look forward to continuing to serve ELM students and community this
year, as always. If you have any questions, you can contact me readily in
three ways:
1. jeanine.siebold@mnps.org ;
2. Mrs. Siebold @ Teacherweb.com; or

Have a great 2009 - 2010 school year! Anything I can do to help,
please, do not hesitate to let me know.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Siebold
