FOCUS ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN JOURNEY, NOT THE DESTINATION

"Every person should keep a journal and every person can keep a journal. It 
should be an enlightening one and should bring great blessings and happiness 
to the families. If there is anyone here who isn't doing so, will you repent 
today and change - change your life?"  -

Title Page: Your Journal must have it’s own unique title that represents 
African American Studies and it must be uniquely constructed.  30 pts

Journal 1: Based on what you have seen on television 
about Africa, how does your knowledge 
about Egypt and Kush compare or contrast 
with your previous thoughts?  30 pts__________________

Journal 2: Imagine that you are a ruler of a country 
made rich through trading. Write a 
description of how you would use that wealth 
and how those uses would compare to the 
actions of West African Rulers Ghana, Mali, 
and Songhai. 30 pts _______________

Journal 3: EXPLAIN HISTORY VOICES IN THE 
GREEN BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF PG. 18. 30 pts ______________________

Journal 4: Typically we blame the slave trade on 
Europeans, now that you know Africans 
traded their own people, how does this 
affect the African-American race today, 
even though this happened thousands of 
years ago. 30 pts ___________________

Journal 5: Imagine that you were a slave on that ship 
sailing the Atlantic Ocean, please describe 
what thoughts would be going through your 
mind, what your next move would be, and 
why. 30 pts ________________

Journal 6: Imagine that you get the chance to go back 
in time with the knowledge that you have of 
the present, write a letter to a slave owner in 
the Virginia Colony convincing him to free 
his slaves and why. 30 pts _________________

Journal 7: Since slavery took such a firm hold in the 
southern colonies  in the 1600’s. Explain 
Why racism still had a strong effect in the 
Civil Rights Movement and even in the 
present times in the South rather than the

Journal 8: Explain why “The Declaration of 
Independence” is contradictory based on the

Journal 9: What are the issues with the three-fifth 
compromise. Explain and tell how you feel

Journal 11: Write your own slave spiritual with a chorus 
and two verses.

Journal 13: Harriet Tubman is coming to your plantation 
to save only five slaves. Obviously you want 
to be one of those slaves. Write a letter to 
Tubman explaining why she should choose 
you for the Underground Railroad.
