Summer Reading Essay Rubric (English III Honors)
Directions: Use this rubric to evaluate specific pieces of your essay. Be
sure that you follow all guidelines. (Do not lose; you must turn in rubric
with the final copy.) Paper must be in 12 font, Times New Roman, TYPED, and
double spaced. PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE. YOU MAY SUBMIT THEM
ELECTRONICALLY, however if you do, make sure they are already in word format.

I. Title Page: You must have your name, title of paper, class period,
and teacher name. Also in upper right hand corner your last name and page
number must be present.

(Introduces the focus of the persuasive essay. Make sure that you restate the

reasons as to why someone should or should not read your summer reading
novel. Ex: Kaye Gibbons novel Ellen Foster should definitely be on one’s must
read list, because it is realistic, heart wrenching, and it is unbiased.

There should be three or more body paragraphs that support each point in your
thesis statement. Each paragraph should begin with a transition word,
followed by a comma. Give examples, details, and experiences to support your
thesis statement.

VII. Quotations (Two quotations must be in each body paragraph. The three are
not included with the 5-7 sentences. If you have a five sentence body
paragraph then you should have an eight sentence paragraph after you apply
your quotes. You will not start or end a body paragraph with a quote. They
are to be intertwined within the body paragraphs. All quotes should be
documented MLA style: “He went to the store” (Foster 34). If it is not cited
then half of your points will be deducted for each quote that is not cited.
