Persuasive Essay Rubric (English II)
Directions: Use this rubric to evaluate specific pieces of your essay. Be
sure that you follow all guidelines. (Do not lose; you must turn in rubric
with the final copy.)
Introduction:
I. Attention Grabber/Strong Lead-In
(Introduce the author, title of stories/poem/topic.) 10 pts

II. Three supporting sentences that give the reader an idea of what the
story is about.

III. Thesis Statement (Last Sentence in Introduction) 15 pts

(Introduces the focus of the persuasive essay. Make sure that you restate
the author’s name and the title of the book. Also be sure to include your 3
reasons as to why someone should or should not read your summer reading
novel. Ex: Kaye Gibbons novel Ellen Foster should definitely be on one’s
must read list, because it is realistic, heart wrenching, and it is unbiased.
Body Paragraphs:
IV. Body Paragraphs
There should be three or more body paragraphs that support each point in
your thesis statement. Each paragraph should begin with a transition word,
followed by a comma. Give examples, details, and experiences to support
your thesis statement.

Included with the 5-7 sentences. If you have a five sentence body paragraph
then you should have a seven sentence paragraph after you used your quotes.
You will not start or end a body paragraph with a quote. They are to be
intertwined within the body paragraphs. All quotes should be documented MLA
style: “He went to the store” (Foster 34). If it is not cited then half of
your points will be deducted for each quote that is not cited.
