MS. NIELSEN'S 8TH GRADE SCIENCE CLASS

		Welcome to the 8th Grade!!!  Glad to have all of you!  Hope all of you had a great summer 
and are ready to get back to work!  I have an exciting school year planned and am looking forward to 
working with each one of you.

BIO: 
Kathryn Nielsen
-Married to Doug Nielsen 11 years.
-2 Children:  Brittany 8 years old. (3rd grader at Rogersville City School) and JD  3 1/2 years old. 
- Teaching experience:  10 years in SC and  5 years in TN
-High School:  Fort Mill High School, Fort Mill, SC 
-College:  Francis Marion College (now a university)
		-Majored in Biology and Minored in Chemistry
-Favorite Animal:  Manatee (Sea Cow)
-Favorite Sport:  Basketball
-Favorite Food:  Anything Italian or Greek or Chocolate!!!
-Favorite Pastime:  Reading (JK Rowling and Patricia Cornwell)
-Biggest Success:  Family
-Biggest Struggle:  Weight Loss

Class Rules:  1.  BE ON TIME.
                        2. BE PREPARED.
                       3.  BE POLITE.

Bathroom rules:  Bathrooms are to be used between classes.
Tardies:  Detention will be given after the 3rd tardy.
Gum:  East Ridge has a no gum policy.  If a student has gum it is considered a disregard of school 
policy.  Students will be warned twice for gum.  On the 3rd time with gum, a student will receive a 
detention.




Grading Scale:

A  =  93 - 100
B  =  85 - 92
C  =  75 - 84
D  =  70 - 74
F  =  Below 70

Brain Boosters:  2 T-CAP-like questions to begin every class

Vocabulary:  Students will be required to keep a vocabulary notebook this year.  This notebook will 
include all of the vocabulary for the entire year. They will do a book definition, a definition in their 
own words, and a drawing of the word.  These will be graded at the end of each chapter.

Notes Scavenger Hunt:  Students will have a notebook scavenger hunt at the end of each chapter.  It 
will cover all notes taken and all homework assignments for that chapter.

Homework:  Students will be given homework to practice concepts learned for each chapter.  
Homework is expected to be handed in the day it is due.  Late work will not be accepted.

Tests:  Test will be given at the end of each chapter

Grading Rules:

Brain Boosters				10%
Vocabulary					20%
Notebook Scavenger Hunts	10%
Homework					20%
Test					                40%
						=100% of Your Grade
