Homework

Your child will not bring home an overload of homework this year. Here
are some things you can look for on a regular basis.
Poetry folders will come home weekly or bi-weekly with a new poem we have
been learning at school. Please listen to your child recite his/her new
poem, sign and return the folder on the next day of school.
Letter journals will come home weekly once we have begun our alphabet
study. These will come home each Monday. Please help your child find
pictures or words that begin with that letter and decorate the appropriate
page. I will let you know which letter we are working on in my newsletter.
Your child should know what letter this is by Tuesday each week because we
begin working on that letter and letter sound on Monday. Alphabet journal
sharing is on Friday of each week. Please send journals to school on Friday
so that your child can share what he/she has done. This is a fun time for the
children to show off!
I will also send a simple alphabet book home weekly for alphabet
practice. These, too, will be sent once we begin our alphabet study. These
are not graded. However, students returning completed books will get a
sticker from our prize sticker box. Help your child with these so that
he/she can be rewarded for his efforts. Again, these are not graded but are
used to encourage additional practice of the letters and letter sounds.
Finally, when your child is ready to read, he will begin practicing this
at school. Once he/she does so, he/she will begin bringing books home to
practice reading. This is a vital component of our reading program. Books
are reread for practice. Once your child begins this process, he will be
bringing books home daily. It is your responsibility to listen to your child
read his/her reading book. How exciting this will be for you and your child!
Each book will need to be returned to school on the following school day so
that a new book can be sent home. These books are school property and must be
treated with care. Displaced, torn up, or destroyed books will have to be
replaced. You will be charged $5.00 to replace any books that do not come to
school in working condition.
