| Welcome to Mrs. Doris Owen’s First Grade
Welcome to Mrs. Doris Owen’s class of learning and fun. This year
will be full of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies while
having FUN. It’s very important for parents to be involved in the classroom
activities. If you would like to be a classroom volunteer, please let me
know by phone 648-9133 or email me at owend@k12tn.net. I am asking all
parents that have email to leave their email address with me. This is a
great way to communicate during the year.
The first six weeks the children will review all letters and sounds
while learning 20 to 100 sight words. The first grade will be testing the
children the first two weeks for the reading program. After testing the
children will be bringing books home Monday through Thursday to read at
home. It is VERY IMPORTANT that your child studies the vocabulary words and
reads the book every night. The children will bring home an orange folder
with classwork, homework, and assignments. On Mondays, the children will
bring a newsletter with all assignments for the week. This newsletter will
include reading skills, math skills, spelling words, stories and vocabulary.
In math the children will be reviewing the numbers 1-20 and their
concepts. The children will be learning to add and subtract with numbers 1-
10. Please drill your child on these basic math facts throughout the year.
Using flashcards will help the children memorize the facts quickly.
The children will have a snack every afternoon between 12 and 1 p.m.
Please send your child to school with a healthy snack such as peanuts,
crackers/cheese, fruit, pudding, cereal, crackers/peanut butter, etc. If you
want your child can purchase his/her snack in the machines for $1.00. Every
student need to have snack. PLEASE send all money in an envelope and label
it.
It is an honor to be your child’s first grade teacher. I am looking
forward to having your child this year. I know that we will be having lots
of fun and learn many new objectives. The first day of class will be next
Wednesday.
If you need me, please feel free to call or email. Good
communication between parents and teachers will assure success for the
child. I have been a teacher at Gleason School for 27 years. I have four
children and one son-in-law. I know what it feels like to balance job, home,
and children. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. We
can work together to help your child be successful in first grade. This
grade is the foundation of your child's education. I am very open
for suggestions and concerns. I know that we will have a GREAT YEAR working
together with your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Doris Owen
