What does my child need to register for school?

Your child will need their birth certificate, social security card, and the
official Tennessee Immunization record (the Green Card), and it also helps
to have the most recent grades from the school you are transferring from.
Also, if there is a custody agreement in place for your child, you should
bring a copy of it for our records.

Can my child change to another school in Weakley County?

Yes, as long as you live in Weakley County. However, if you do not
physically move to a address inside the school zone you are moving to you
must have approval from both principals and the superintendent to switch
schools. Your child has the choice of what school to attend at the
beginning of each school year, but if the school year has started the above
policy is in place. Also, the parents must provide transportation for the
child if they do not live in the school zone they are transferring to.

What is Guidance anyway?

The term 'Guidance Counselor' has been officially changed to the more
appropriate title of 'School Counselor'. A school counselor is licensed
through the state of Tennessee just like a teacher, and we have a state
curriculum to follow called the Tennessee Comprehensive School Counseling
Program. The goal of this program is to prepare all students for success in
school, to become well adjusteed members of society, and to be a productive
lifelong learner in the future.

What do you do in counseling?

Most of my time as a High School counselor is spent doing career develpment
lessons and inventories with students, making sure they have the necessary
classes for graduation, and helping them make decisions concerning college,
technical schools, and careers after graduation. With Jr. High students I
conduct classroom lessons on career development, conflict resolution,
alcohol and drug prevention, stress reduction, study skills, etc. I also am
available to talk to students individually when problems arise that they
need assistance in dealing with, as well as talk to parents and teachers
when the express concerns about specific students. I am also responsible
for registering and withdrawing students, scheduling students, and printing
report cards each grading period.

Is individual counseling available?

Yes, due to the many responsibilities I have in serving six grades my time
is very limited. I do try to speak to students individually when the need
arises. However, when I see that the student requires more time than I have
to give or if the problem is more indepth than what I feel I am equiped to
deal with, I will refer the student to the Student Assistance Program.
The SAP is a program provided by Carey Counseling Center in partnership with
Weakley County School System. A permission/information packet is sent or
mailed to the home for the parent to fill out and return to me. At this
point I will make the referral to the SAP therapist who will come and speak
to your child several times (usually lasts for 10 weeks). After this time
is up if the therapist feels the child needs further counseling the parent
will be notified and a referral for further treatment will be made. This is
a free program to our students. We also have a School Social Worker, new to
our system this year, who can be of assistance to students when the need
arises.

What are the qualifications for the Lottery Scholarship (Hope Scholarship)?

In order for a student to be eligible for the Lottery Scholarship the
student must have a 21 on the ACT and a 3.0 GPA. Certain students may be
eligible for a conditional scholarship through the Lottery program if they
do not have the 21 and 3.0. Please see me if you have questions about this.
