How are grades determined?
In the Math Department, we have a standard procedure for determining the
grade for the class taken. The homework average counts 20% of the grade, the
quiz average counts 20% of the grade. and the test average counts as 60% of
the grade. In addition, an end-of-course or gateway test counts 15% of the
grade and the midterm or final exam counts as 1/9 of the grade.
Since the purpose of the ACT Prep class is to help students raise their ACT
score, classroom participation is very important. Consequently a daily grade
is taken for each student. The percentages are also different from the other
math courses with tests determining 50% of a student's grade; homework
determining 25% of a student's grade; and, quizzes determining 25% of a
student's grade. More information on the grading and expectations for the ACT
Prep class is located in the handouts section under the topic "Course
Syllabus for ACT Prep".

What is the make-up policy for this class?
I adhere to the policy in the student handbook, which dictates that make-up
work should be completed within 5 days after the student returns. This
includes any assigned homework as well as missed tests or quizzes. This
policy applies only to excused absences. If an absence is unexcused, the
student receives a 0 for any missed work. If a student was present when an
assignment was made, that student is responsible for having that assignment
completed on the day that he/she returns. If a student is present on a test
day and we have covered no new material during that student's absence, that
student should be prepared to take the test. I announce major tests several
days in advance, so students can have time to prepare.

How can a parent monitor their son/daughter's progress in a class?
At the beginning of each block, I send a letter to each parent explaining the
method of grading for this class. At the bottom of the letter, I request the
parent's signature to signify that they have read the letter as well as their
e-mail address. I send progress reports to parent's e-mail address following
each test. In addition, the letter gives information concerning my planning
period and the school's phone number. Please contact me for an update on
your son/daughter's progress or if you have any questions. Each student
receives a progress report after each test, so they should be able to share
that information with you.

What is available if a student needs extra help in this class?
Greeneville High School provides tutoring opportunities outside of the
regular school hours for students that need extra help with math. I am
available after school until 4:00 p.m. on Monday-Thursday. Students usually
do not want to hang around school on Friday afternoons so I don't plan to
stay unless a student tells me in advance that he/she needs help. Mrs.
Burley, another math instructor, is available for tutoring beginning at 7:00
a.m. Monday-Friday. These opportunities are available without cost to the
student and do not require appointments. Students are encouraged to us these
services when they need some extra help.
