Expectations and Policies

1. Be an active and prepared learner.

2. Respect all people and property.

BE AN ACTIVE AND PREPARED LEARNER

--Be on time for class, ready to begin the lesson. Students should have materials ready, including a sharpened pencil, paper, textbook, calculator (for math classes), and homework. After the bell rings, students should not ask to leave the room except in case of an emergency. [Geometry students must have a calculator with trig functions. Algebra II and Math IV students must have a graphing calculator, preferably a TI-83 or TI-84.] Third Tardy in a Six Weeks = Detention. Recall that every third tardy equals an absence.

--Be involved with the lesson by paying attention, taking notes, asking/answering questions, and working on assignments when given. The following are examples of behaviors not acceptable during class: sleeping, working on assignments from other classes, reading library books, playing calculator games, passing notes, and text messaging. Purses/bags should remain on the floor or under the desks during class.

RESPECT ALL PEOPLE AND PROPERTY

--Listen silently while the teacher or another student is addressing the class. Raise your hand to speak or ask a question during instruction.

--Use appropriate language, tone of voice, and volume. Do not make disparaging remarks about other students or teachers. Keep your hands to yourself.

--Keep the room clean. Discard any unwanted paper at the end of class, and do not write on the desks. Do not throw objects or paper in the classroom. Do not eat or blow bubbles during class. Leave all legs of the desks on the floor, and do not jump over desks. Take care of the textbook assigned to you; it is not to be used as a folder.

All polices as described in the Student Handbook apply.

Math Class Grading

40% Tests 30% Quizzes 15% Weekly Homework 15% Daily Homework/Classwork

Tests: There will usually be 2 or 3 chapter tests each grading period. They will often include some questions from previous chapters. Correcting tests to recover up to half the points lost will frequently be an option. This will be done on the student's own time.

Quizzes: Each quiz will be assigned a point value proportionate to the length and difficulty of the quiz. All points for the grading period will be tallied for the total quiz grade.

Special assignments and projects may be counted in any category.

**Calculators will not be used on tests or quizzes unless otherwise stated. Basic arithmetic skills are a prerequisite to the class. Students will be expected to complete simple calculations by hand and only use calculators for their special functions and for tedious computations.

Daily Homework: Homework will be assigned almost daily. All problems (except word problems) should be written, and work must be shown unless otherwise instructed. Homework will be checked at the beginning of class. Students will receive 4 points for each completed assignment. No partial credit will be given unless at least half of the assignment is complete.

Weekly Homework: Students will receive worksheets generally due once per week. These assignments will be graded for accuracy; as above, work must be shown to receive credit. Late work will be accepted one day past the due date for a maximum score of 70.

Academic Integrity: All work should clearly be the student’s own. On daily homework, getting some assistance or clarification from another student is certainly permissible and encouraged; copying is not. Students will receive a zero for any assignment, quiz, project, or test that they have copied or let another student copy. Calculators may be checked before quizzes or tests. Cheating is unethical and will not be tolerated.

Extra Credit: Bonuses will occur on many homework sheets, quizzes, and tests. Sometimes notes or homework corrections may be taken up at the end of class for bonus points. Occasional other opportunities may arise for extra credit. Rather than relying on extra credit, work hard, study hard, and come for help when needed!

Music History Grading

(This will apply during the first four six-weeks. When we start working on the play, I will give out a different grade policy reflective of that change.)

50% Tests/Quizzes 40% Classwork/Homework 10% Participation

Tests will be counted twice. Quizzes could include unannounced ones following a reading assignment. Classwork and homework will include reading/film guides, reflection paragraphs, group activities, chapter reviews, etc. Special projects and assignments may count as test grades. You will have a Composer Research Paper and a few other smaller research projects/presentations. All assignments should reflect English skills representative of college bound seniors. Spelling and grammar errors will result in point loss.

Three points on the participation grade will be kept or lost during each class meeting. Points may be lost for any of the following behaviors: sleeping, talking when inappropriate, working on assignments from other classes, refusing to participate in class activities, etc. All points for the day will be lost for an unexcused absence or the accumulation of enough tardies to equal an absence. Extra points might be given for volunteering to participate in certain activities. It should be very easy to get a 100 on this grade unless you choose otherwise.

Academic Integrity: All work should clearly be the student’s own. Getting some assistance or clarification from another student or source is certainly permissible and encouraged; copying is not. Students will receive a zero for any work that they have copied or let another student copy. Do not forget rules about avoiding plagiarism. Cheating is unethical and will not be tolerated.

Late Work: Students may turn in late assignments at the next class meeting for a maximum score of 70.

Extra Credit: Bonuses are on most tests and some quizzes. A unit test will be given at the end of each grading period that will replace the lowest test grade if it is higher. Some other extra credit opportunities may arise, including attendance at approved musical events. Success with my bonuses comes by paying close attention in class and taking good notes.

ACT Prep Grading

60% Participation/Homework 40% Graded Work/Quizzes

Participation/Homework: Each day’s class will be worth 4 participation points. Points may be lost for any of the following behaviors: sleeping, talking when inappropriate, working on assignments from other classes, refusing to participate in class activities, etc. All points for the day will be lost for an unexcused absence or the accumulation of enough tardies to equal an absence. Any homework assignment not graded for accuracy will be given 2 points for completion. The points accumulated will be converted into a percentage grade based on the number available each grading period.

Graded Work/Quizzes: Quizzes will be given on some skills covered. Other graded work will include some homework and various projects throughout the year. Projects may be weighted as multiple assignments if they require substantially more work. Late work will be accepted one day past the due date for a maximum score of 70.

Extra Credit: Extra credit will be rare in ACT Prep. If you are properly participating in all class work and activities, your grade will be fine and you will see improvement on your ACT score.

Make-up Work

Students should check the website or with a classmate for assignments during an absence. Quizzes/tests should be made up before school, during study hall, by arrangement after school, or during class if time permits. School Board policy states that students have the number of days absent plus one to make up work from excused absences. Work, tests, or quizzes assigned before the absence are due when the student returns. The teacher has the right to give alternate versions of tests or quizzes to students who were absent. Make-up work is the student’s responsibility.

Extra help is available at 7:30, during 5th period, and some days after school. Check my website for homework assignments and links to additional practice or extension (www.teacherweb.com/TN/Greenfield/LindaFarmer). There is a page where you can ask questions or provide comments. My email address is FARMERL1@K12TN.NET if you need to ask a question outside the school day. Please get help as soon as you need it. Don’t wait until you are terribly far behind!
