Purpose
We will study United States history from discovery until 1865. This class is
designed to prepare students to think critically about history.
Students will engage in many activities designed to increase their knowledge
of the subject matter. The primary mode of transmitting class material is by
reading. We will engage in note-taking, worksheet packets, and other in and
out of class activities designed to help the students to become informed
citizens.
Class Conduct
Students are expected to conduct themselves as young ladies and gentlemen.
They are expected to follow the rules and guidelines of the Blount County
Schools as presented in their agenda planner.
Materials
Students will be issued a textbook. They are responsible for the book for
the entire period they attend HMS. Should a student lose their book or if
the book becomes damaged beyond repair or use the student is responsible for
paying the replacement cost, $56.00. I urge students to cover their texts
with a book cover designed for such purposes.
Students must bring their pen or pencil, paper, textbook, and agenda planner
to class every day. If students cannot find their book or have forgotten it
they should make arrangements with another student to borrow theirs.
From time to time we will engage in activities that require poster board,
glue, etc. I keep a box of colored pencils that students may use. However,
they may need to purchase others materials. I will make a list prior to any
assignment that requires those items.
Class Agenda
My weekly agenda is posted on my TeacherWeb site (see above for address).
This is a general agenda and is subject to change. However, students and
parents can generally rely on it for current assignments. When in doubt, I
will accept assignments as posted on the website even if they have changed
during the week.
Video Instructional Materials
I use video to supplement material covered in class. Many of these videos
are produced specifically for education. Selections include those made
available by The History Channel, A&E, Discovery, and PBS. Others may be
used as well. Some videos are of PG rated material. Prior to viewing I
will send a permission slip home giving the title and describing any
questionable content. Students must return the permission form prior to
viewing. Alternative assignments will be provided to students who have not
returned signed permission forms or whose parents object to the video.
Homework Policy
Homework is to be turned in on the due date. Students may make up
assignments per the Blount County Schools policy. Late homework will not be
accepted unless there is an extenuating circumstance. Acceptance of late
work is at my sole discretion and may incur a penalty.
Attendance Policy
The Blount County Schools attendance policy is: three (3) classroom
tardies result in one (1) unexcused absence in the class. Five (5)
unexcused absences in a nine week period will result in a percent grade of
69 and an F in that class. The attendance policy is non-negotiable. Please
be sure to attend class promptly and turn
in any absence notes to the office within three days of the absence. Please
refer to the agenda planner for clarification.
Bathroom/Hall Policy
In order to minimize disruptions to learning students will only be allowed
to leave the room escourted by another student. This buddy system has been
effective in eliminated disruptions to the school day. Therefore it will be
enforced.
Students should use the bathroom during class changes and before or after
lunch. I realize that it is not always possible to do so.
Students
must have their agenda planner in order to sign out from class to go to the
bathroom or any other location in the building.
If a student has a medical condition, please notify the school nurse so that
accommodations can be made.
Grading Scale
The Blount County Schools grading scale is: A=93-100, B=85-92, C=75-84,
D=70-74, F=<70.
I look forward to teaching students about the history of our great country.
