Preschool just started this year teaching with the Letter People Curriculum. The Letter People is thematically organized into different units and themes. Each theme contains five or six units dealing with the facet of the theme. A unit consists of a series of six lessons. A lesson begins with a brief whole-class Meeting Circle activity followed by a selection of small-group Interest Center activities for the children to choose from. Each theme also has a different Letter Person that teaches the students all about that theme. The Letter Person has things set up in every center for the children to participate and learn in. The Letter People really come to life. They love getting to meet a new Letter Person. Each Letter Person also has a book and song that go with each of them. The children get to sing and read with the Letter People all week long. The order in which the letters are presented is based on speech sound development research. Letters representing speech sounds that children acquire first are taught first. The special characteristics and personalities of individual Letter People fit particularly well with certain unit topics.
