*** First Grade is a HUGE transition from Kindergarten. It can be very
overwhelming for both student and parent. I have found that almost every
child makes this transition smoothly. I try to provide a homelike,
positive, safe and fun place to learn. Children learn best at home and
at school when they feel comfortable and feel successful. I provide a
variety of ways for this. There are varying levels of reading. Some
children are in the beginning stages of reading and others are more
advanced. I do require each child to bring home their reading book for
homework one day a week (beginning when we start our hard-back reading
book) This is for practice reading AND to get them in the habit of
taking something home, reading the story with mom/dad and putting it
back into their backpack on their own. As the year progresses, some of
the children will bring home another reading book, according to their
reading level. You may keep this book at home until you feel your child
can read it fluently. I will write you a note letting you know about this.
