Week of February 8 - 12 Students of the Week: Jackson and Allie

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone enjoyed our snow days, but it was time for the snow to
go. It is good to be back at school and on a routine. However, I am keeping
my eye on the weather for Monday and Tuesday, as there are weather reports we
may see more of the "white stuff."
On Friday, Feruary 5th, I will send home a newsletter with next week's
Spelling and Vocabulary words just incase school is closed because of the
weather. They can also be found under homework on this website.
Please help your child continue practicing addition facts to 18. Some
children haven't passed a test in quite some time. Please encourage your
child to do their best, but there is no substitute for the additional
practice that children receive from home on a one to one basis.
Next Tuesday, February 9, the children will have a Math test over money.
Money can be a very difficult skill for some. Please help by reviewing the
value of a half-dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny, practice counting
different combinations of coins and help your child to remember to count the
coin with the greatest value first. Please include quarters, dimes, and
pennies and quarters, nickels, and pennies. Also they will be shown a
combination of coins and then be asked to use a different combination of
coins to show the same amount. We will continue to review for this test, but
extra practice at home can give your child more confidence and help him/her
to perform better on the test. Thanks for helping your child to become more
successful!
In English next week, the children will learn about the following verbs:
am, is, are, was, and were. Am, is, and are tell about now. Was and Were are
verbs that tell about the past. Am, is and are tell about one. For
example:The butterfly is on the flower. Was and were tell about more than
one. For example: The butterflies are on the flowers.
In Spelling next week the children will learn about some more r-
controlled vowels. (They have already learned about the sounds /or/ and /ar/
make.) Now they will practice words with /ir/ as in shirt, /er/ as in her,
and /ur/ as in hurt. When they hear this sound at the end of a word it is
usually spelled with /er/.
In Reading, we will review contractions, practice r-controlled words, and
drawing conclusions. Since authors don't always tell the reader what happens
in a story, they may have to use clues in the words and pictures to figure
out information on their own. Please help guide your child to draw
conclusions in the leveled readers they bring home in their reading log this
week. Also, with any other books they read to you.
I will begin to post the "Amazing Words" we use each week should you be
interested in using them at home in conversations with your child.
Amazing words for this week include: cycle, develop, insect, yearly,
rearrange, fragile, emerge, vessel. I story this week is about a caterpillar
changing into a butterfly.

I am expecting a great week of learning.

Thanks,
Debbie Randolph

Monday: Progress Reports will be sent home.

Friday, February 12th Valentine's party 12:45 - 1:45. We will decorate
envelopes or file folders for the children to collect their
valentines in. Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Major will take care of
getting all the items we need for the children to make ice cream
        sundaes and make one craft.
