November 9 - 13
Dear Parents,
Thanks to all the parents that were able to work it into their schedules
to attend our field trip with us. It was a beautiful day and the children
really enjoyed the day! I'm very thankful we were able to find another farm
we could go to. We will have one more field trip in the Spring. Since we had
to book this trip during the summer months, we only booked enough seats for
teachers and students.
We have been working on reading words with long vowels and CVCe patterns
(consonant, vowel, consonant, silent /e/) We often refer to the final e
as "sneaky e." We have worked with words containing long /a/ and /i/. This
week we will include CVCe words with long /o/. If your child has difficulty
reading one of these words, remind him/her that it is a "sneaky e" word.
This usually reminds the children of the rules and helps them to read the
word. Please check out starfall.com online for further practice with long
vowel words.
We will be reviewing proper nouns in the coming weeks, as this was a very
difficult skill for the children this year. I did not record their test grade
on proper nouns, as their test grades indicated to me they need more practice.
I will retest over proper nouns at a later date. Proper nouns are the
specific names of people, places, things, or animals and must be capitalized.
For example: John Smith, London Bridge, Mt.Juliet, Rover
In Math, I would like to ask for your help in reviewing the double facts
with your child. You will only need nine flash cards (can use index cards,
etc.) 1 + 1 =, 2+2=, 3+3=, 4+4=, 5+5=, 6+6=, 7+7=, 8+8=, 9+9=
It is important for your child to memorize these facts. Once memorized, your
child can begin to work on the double plus one facts such as, 1+2, 2+3, 3+4,
4+5, 5+6, 6+7, 7+8, 8+9. These numbers are next to one another when counting
and on the number line. I teach them to circle the lowest number, double it
and add one to the sum. Thank you for working with your children at home to
help them become the best they can be!

The grading scale on report cards for the first grade are as follows:
90 - 100 E (excelling)
80 - 89 S (Satisfactory)
70 - 79 N (Needs Improvement)(Additional at home practice is
recommended.)
60 or below U (Unsatisfactory) ( Additional at home practice
recommended.)
Letter and number reversals will be counted wrong after we return from fall
break. This will allow time for the children to practice the formation of all
letters and numbers. If your child has difficulty with reversals, please help
him/her make corrections on their school work when it comes home on a daily
basis.
