SYLLABUS Geometry Instructor: Mrs. Laura Brown, Room P3 Email: brownl@wcschools.com Course Goals and Objectives: This course is designed to enhance students’ applicable algebra skills and to make connections between math and everyday life. This class is also a building block to prepare students for future mathematics courses as well as to prepare them for the ACT. Class Fee: $3.00 is required per each student. Materials / Supplies Needed: • notebook or folder with loose-leaf paper . Composition Book (not a spiral) • At least 2 pencils each day • Appropriate textbook (issued by the teacher) • Calculators (highly recommended TI 84 plus silver or TI nspire) . Geoemtry Kit (compass, ruler, protractor, graph paper) • All other supplies needed will be told to you with ample notice Classroom Rules and Expectations: 1. Be Punctual (be in your assigned seat before tardy bell rings) 2. Be Prepared (have all supplies with you and ready to use when bell rings, i.e. pencils sharpened, calculators, ect.) 3. Be Respectful (follow all directions and behave appropriately in the classroom.) 4. Follow all other school rules listed in the student handbook! Classroom Procedures and Drills: Procedures will be discussed and practiced at length in class, this includes: 1. Fire Drill 2. Tornado Drill 3. Lock-Down Drill 4. Restroom Breaks 5. Daily Class Routines 6. Leaving the classroom 7. Tardies Discipline Policy: (note: each offence will be appropriately documented) • All Lebanon High School policies will be followed. Refer to your student handbook. • Minor infractions: students will be given a warning and a chance to correct the behavior. If the undesired behavior continues students may be held after class and/or asked to complete a discipline essay/reflection; parents will be notified. • The severe clause: in the event of a major infraction/physical altercation with anyone for any reason or if the situation becomes out of control, the student(s) involved will be immediately turned over to the principal’s office. • Dress code violation: if the student is in violation of the dress code required by the Wilson County School Board, the student will receive a dress code violation form and will be sent to the office where the administrator will determine the consequence. Grading Policy: 1. Grades will be calculated by dividing the total points earned by the students by the total points possible. 2. A grade sheet will be issued to allow the parent and student the ability to easily determine the current grade. 3. Graded assignments will include but are not limited to tests, pop- quizzes, in-class assignments, homework checks, projects, and daily grades. Cheating will not be tolerated. 4. Homework and in-class assignments will be checked randomly. Usually they will be checked for completion only. A complete problem is one in which the original problem is written down along with all work, not just the answers. Occasionally assignments will be checked for accuracy: Grading Scale: A = 93-100% B = 85-92.9% C = 75-84.9% D = 70-74.9% F = Below 70% GEOMETRY OUTLINE (Days listed are tentative) Tools of Geometry (chapterand2.5,3.7) (8 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.1 CLE3108.1.3 CLE3108.1.4 CLE3108.1.6 CLE3108.1.7 CLE3108.4.1 CLE3108.4.4 SPI 3108.1.1 SPI3108.2.1 SPI3108.3.1 SPI3108.4.2 SPI3108.1.3 1-1: Patterns and Reasoning 1-2: Points, Lines, and Planes 1-3: Segments, Rays, Types of Lines, and Planes (Project) 1-4: Measuring Segments and Angles 2-5: Angle Pairs (definitions in algebra) 1-5: Constructions 3-7: Constructions 1-6: Distance and Midpoint Formulas 1-7: Perimeter, Area, and Circumference Formulas Proofs and Logic (chapter2and5.4) (5 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.1 CLE3108.1.3 CLE3108.1.5 CLE3108.1.6 CLE3108.4.3 SPI 3108.1.4 SPI3108.4.4 2-1: Conditional Statements 2-2: Biconditionals 5-4: Converse, Inverse, and Contra-positives 2-3: Deductive and Inductive Reasoning 2-4: Properties from Algebra 1 2-5: Types of Angle Pairs **** Conjunctions and Disjunctions (supplemental) Truth Tables Parallel and Perpendicular Lines (chapter 3 and 4.5) (6 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.3 CLE3108.1.6 CLE3108.3.1 CLE3108.4.2 CLE3108.4.4 SPI3108.3.1 SPI3108.4.1 3-5: Slope 3-6: Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines 3-1: Angle Pairs formed with Transversals 3-2: Proving Lines Parallel 3-3: Triangle Sums and Types of Triangles 4-5: Isosceles and Equilateral Triangles (definitions) 3-4: Types of polygons and Sum Formulas 4 ½ week Benchmark covering Units 1-3 Triangle Congruence (chapter4) (5 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.6 CLE3108.4.8 SPI3108.4.11 SPI3108.4.12 4-1: Congruence and Corresponding Parts 4-2: SSS and SAS 4-3: ASA and AAS 4-6: HL 4-4: CPCTC 4-5: Isosceles and Equilateral Triangles 4-7: Proofs Relationships in Triangles (chapter5) (6 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.6 SPI3108.4.3 5-1: Midsegments 5-2: Bisectors 5-3: Concurrent lines -Medians and Altitudes 5-5: Triangle Inequalities -supplement w/Hinge Theorem** Radical Review before Right Triangles Right Triangles (chapters7,8,and9) (10 days) TN Math Standards: CLE 3108.1.2 CLE3108.1.5 CLE3108.2.1 CLE3108.2.2 CLE3108.4.10 SPI3108.2.1 SPI3108.2.2 SPI3108.4.15 7-2: Pythagorean Theorem and its Converse 7-3: Special Right Triangle (45-45-90 and 30-60-90) 9-1: Trigonometry: Tangent Ratio 9-2: Trigonometry: Sine and Cosine Ratios 9-3: Angles of Elevation and Depression **** Law of Sines and Cosines 9-4: Vectors 9 Week Benchmark 1-5, 7.2, 7.3, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 **********************FALL BREAK (2 WEEKS)********************************** Quadrilateral (chapter6) (7 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.4 SPI3108.3.1 SPI3108.3.2 SPI3108.4.2 SPI3108.4.3 6-1: Classifications of Quadrilaterals 6-2: Parallelograms 6-3: Proving Quadrilaterals are Parallelograms 6-4: Special Parallelograms 6-5: Trapezoids and Kites 6-7: Midsegments in Trapezoids 6-6: coordinate Plane Similarity (chapter8) (7 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.6 CLE3108.1.3 CLE3108.1.5 CLE3108.4.8 SPI3108.4.11 SPI3108.4.12 SPI3108.4.14 SPI3108.4.15 8-1: Ratios and Proportions (comic strip project) 8-2: Similar Polygons 8-3: Proving Triangles Similar by AA, SSS, and SAS 8-5: Proportions in Triangles 8-6: Perimeter and Area of Similar Figures 7-8: Geometric Probability Area, Surface Area and Volume (chapter7) (10 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.1.2 CLE3108.4.6 SPI3108.1.2 SPI3108.4.6 SPI3108.4.7 SPI3108.4.8 7-1: Area of Parallelograms and Triangles 7-4: Area of Trapezoids, Rhombuses, and Kites 7-5: Area of Regular Polygons 9-5: Polygon Area using Trig (SAS) 10.1/10.2: Space Figure Vocabulary 10.3/10.4: Surface Area 10.5/10.6/10.7: Volume of Solid Figures **** Platonic Solids 13 ½ week Benchmark Test thru Area Circles (chapters7and11) (10 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.3.1 CLE3108.4.9 CLE3108.5.1 SPI3108.3.1 SPI3108.4.13 SPI3108.2.1 SPI3108.5.1 7-6: Circles and Arcs 7-7: Area of Circles and Sectors 7-8: Geometric Probability 11-1: Circles and Tangent Lines 11-2: Chords and Arcs 11-3: Inscribed Angles 11-4: Angle Measures and Segment Lengths 11-5: Equations of Circles 11-6: Locus Transformations (chapter12) (4 days) TN Math Standards: CLE3108.3.2 CLE3108.4.7 SPI3108.3.3 SPI3108.4.10 12-5: Symmetry 12-1/12-2/12-3/12-6: Tessellations 12-7: Dilations 18 Week Benchmark (EOC DECEMBER 8th 2009)
