About The Teacher

I joined the faculty of Byars Dowdy in August of 2007.  ESL is one of my 
life-long passions.  I came here from years in training and education, which 
began with my Bachelor's degree in English with teacher certification from 
Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas.  I later earned a Master's degree 
in Teaching English as a Second Language from Northern Arizona University.  
I taught in public schools on the Navajo Reservation and in Tucson, Arizona, 
as well as in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  Then I decided to work overseas and 
did teaching and administrative work in several locations in Japan, along 
with a time in Morocco, North Africa.  I settled in to the Middle Tennessee 
area in 1991, and worked with international business clients until coming to 
Byars Dowdy.  I live with my wife and Shetland Sheepdog Shelby in Mt.Juliet, 
and do my best to keep up with my two children and nine (yes, 9!) 
grandchildren who are all living in Central Arkansas.  My native language is 
American English; my second language is Japanese.

Mission

Our mission is to give every student the English language skills they need 
to succeed in their American education and participate in U.S. society, 
while assisting them in understanding American culture and maintaining pride 
in their own cultural roots.

In order to accomplish our mission, the teacher has many responsibilities 
defined in the Tennessee ESL Program Guide.  Responsibilities directly 
related to the ESL classromm and ELL students include:
+Create and maintain an instructional climate that is conducive to learning.
+Assist with the identification of ELL (English Language Learner) students 
using appropriate assessment instruments.
+Plan and implement ESL instruction based on the diagnosed needs of each 
individual student.
+Evaluate student performance in the ESL class and provide mainstream 
classroom teachers with input regarding progress.
+Maintain records on each student attending ESL class.
+Provide information on ELL students to state and federal agencies when 
requested.
+Assist ELL students in understanding American culture and encourage all 
students to understand other cultures.

I realize that these are lofty goals, and can only be accomplished by hard 
work on the part of the 
teacher and the students, with the support of the entire school system, the 
students' parents and 
guardians, and the community.
