Ask the Librarian
How many books may children check out? A total of two(2). One AR and one pleasure book. A book is checked out for a period of two(2) weeks, and it can be renewed one additional time. Is there a fine for overdue library books? Yes, there is. When a book is checked out, the due date is stamped on the Date Due slip in the back of the book. After two weeks, the book is due for return unless it is renewed. A three-day grace period is extended and overdue notices are sent daily to the classrooms. On the fourth day, a fine of 20 cents is assessed, and the fine increases at a rate of 5 cents per day until the book is returned and the fine is paid. Do I need a reading folder in order to check out a book? Yes, you do. All students at CHUE have a reading folder which contains a reading log and a ZPD. Students are required to read AR book that are within the ZPD unless otherwise authorized by the classroom teacher. You mentioned a ZPD. Exactly what does that mean? At the beginning of the school year all stuents are given the Accelerated Reader STAR Reading Diagnostic Test which identifies the reading level and ZPD of the student. The reading level is the combination score for word recognition and comprehension. The ZPD or Zone of Proximal Development is a reading level range from which a student should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading without frustration. These scores present a snapshot of achievement at a specific point in time. STAR tests are also given at mid-year and at the end of the school year to measure the student's growth in reading. Are there behavior rules for the library?
