Art Education Standard 4

Art standard 4 relates art to history and cultures. Our objective was to understand the role of the artist in our culture. The students were asked
to draw an artist at work in their studio. Details such as equipment, special clothing and furniture were to be shown. They realized that there
were stereotypes about artists. This brought forth many questions. Students described the art they liked and were given labels -such as
landscape architect, fashion designer, glassblower. These were in addition to a word bank on the board of art careers. Each student was asked
to compose two questions about an art career. They read these out loud and received their answers. Their best question was posted on a large
poster. We discussed the enormous amount of questions recorded hourly by Google. The students posted meaningful inquiries that showed an
interest in educational preparation as well as interest in the everyday life of an artist. There is a display in the hallway.
Students are experiencing the discussed parts of a landscape by coloring a tuscan scene. They are encouraged to layer the hills with blended
colors. Details are encouraged.
Leonardo's Mona Lisa will place a portrait against a landscape. They will do a lesson entitled "Mona Mia" because they make the famous lady
their own work with modifications. Art will be related to history and cultures (Standard 4) by studying Leonardo da Vinci's biography.
