Teacher in The Workplace Program

What is Teacher in the Workplace?

The Wilson County and Lebanon Special Schools District partnered together with the Lebanon/Wilson County Chamber of Commerce to provide an opportunity for teachers in the school system to participate in the Teacher in the Workplace program. This year teachers participating in the program were asked to choose a business that related to their own classroom curriculum. The Teacher in the Workplace is a program for teachers to learn and develop by taking an active part in an organized experience that connects the school with the community. Participating teachers were asked to spend a week with a business of their choice in which they explored and experienced positive ways to apply what they have learned to classroom instruction.

What I learned?

I was placed at the Lebanon Democrat to work in the newsroom office. I assisted in taking notes for interviews, and in helping design the layout of the paper. I also was asked to write an article about my experience. The most important thing that I learned about working for the paper was that you need to have a tremendous work ethic to be a reporter. Many of the hours that reporters work and self determined and flexible. Reporters must be able to work fast and on demand. Reporters must be able to transform to be able to be doing many tasks at once. I learned better to appreciate what all goes into making the daily newspaper. I also saw the tremendous impact of good speaking and interviewing skills. While I enjoyed my experience at the Lebanon Democrat, I just don't think that I have the nose of a "News Hound!"
