Students will not be given homework on Fridays.
Each student should have approximately 15 - 20 minutes of math homework
Monday thru Thursday of each week for reinforcement of skills taught that
day; however, some students may complete the work at school.
CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK:
**Students must copy and show his/her work on all work.
Corrections can be made on a blank sheet of paper stapled to the back of the

SEVENTH GRADE STATE VOCABULARY WORDS: Words have been updated to new state
words. Each student will become a "voc. expert" and will be assigned one word
to explore in-depth. Students will rotate words every couple of weeks.
Seventh Grade State Vocabulary Words Name _______________
Mrs. Sparkman’s math class Block _______________
1. absolute value – the distance a number is from zero on the number
line.
2. additive inverses – two integers that are opposite of each other are
called additive inverses. The sum of any number and its additive
inverses are zero.
3. box and whisker plot – a diagram that summarizes data using the
median, the upper and lower quartiles, and the extreme values. A
box is drawn around the quartile values and whiskers extend from
each quartile to the extreme data points.
4. coefficient – the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable.
5. cube root – the number or quantity of which a given number or
quantity is the cube. The cube root of 8 is 2.
6. function – a relation in which each element of the input is paired
with exactly one element of the output according to a specified rule.
7. function notation – a way to name a function that is defined by an
equation.
8. GCD – (Greatest Common Divisor) the largest number that divides
evenly into each of a given set of numbers. Also called greatest
common factor.
9. GCF – (Greatest Common Factor) the highest number that divides
exactly into two or more numbers. Ex. The GCF of 12 and 30 is 6.
10. histogram – a special kind of bar graph that displays the frequency
of data that has been organized into equal intervals. The interval
covers all possible values of data, therefore there are no spaces
between the bars on the graph.
11. intercepts – the coordinate of a point at which a line, curve, or
surface intersects a coordinate axis.
12. interquartile range – the range of the middle half of the data. The
difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile.
13. LCM - (Least Common Multiple) the smallest quantity that is
divisible by two or more given quantities without a remainder. 12 is
the LCM of 2, 3, 4, and 6.
14. linear equation – an equation that when graphed produces a
straight line.
15. negative exponents – a way of expressing the multiplicative inverse
of a number.
16. perfect square – a rational number whose square root is a whole
number. 25 is a perfect square because its square root is 5.
17. property – an open sentence that is true for any numbers.
18. proportional relationships – a relationship in which two pairs of
numbers form a proportion. For example, coordinate points (1,2) and
(2,4) have proportional relationships because 1/2 = 2/4.
19. quartile – values that divide a set of data into four equal parts.
20. scatter plots – a graph that shows the relationship between two sets
of data.
21. scientific notation – a way of expressing numbers as the product of
a number that is at least 1 but less than 10 and a power of 10. In
scientific notation, 5,500 is 5.5 x 10 .
22. slope – the rate of change between any two points on a line. The
ratio of a vertical change to horizontal range.
23. square root – One of the two equal factors of a number. A square
root of 144 is 12.
24. unit rates – a rate with a denominator of 1.
