| Reading- We will be using the Basal Reader this year and along with
trade books. There will be a reading test each Thursday covering the
vocabulary and basal story of the week. Your child should also be
practicing their Reader's Theater part each night. Readers Theater is
proving very successful in improving fluency and seems enjoyable to the
class.
Math- We are now working on expressions, variables, and equations. This is
a difficult task for some of the class. Each Wednesday we have a
Multiplication Challenge. Students are competing against their own times-
trying to be quicker and more accurate each week. They have as much time as
needed to complete 50 problems. Their time is recorded and most are getting
quicker and more accurate by the week.
Spelling- Spelling tests will be on Friday also. We will have a core list
of 20 words and five review words that is required by all students. The
other five words (challenge words) are counted as bonus words.
optional. Spelling homework for the week is assigned on Monday and is due on
Thursday.
English- We are working in Chapter 3 of the English book. We have studies
verbs, helping and main verbs, and linking verbs. We also work in our
writing notebooks.
Science- We are on Chapter 4 and your child is taking notes and keeping
completed workbook pages in their binder as a study guide for the chapter.
Social Studies- We have adopted a new Social Studies book. It begins with
the Civil War and ends with current times. We are studying Chapter 4 and
the class also has notes to be used as a study guide for the test in their
spiral notebook.
