Welcome to fifth grade! Below you will find policies and procedures for my class. Some items pertain to 5th grade in general and others are specific to my classroom only. I will leave this on the website for your information throughout the year. PLANNERS: All students have a planner for recording homework assignments, test dates, and other important information daily. We usually write down tests for the week on Monday or any other project that may be due during that time. I sign the planners daily and require you to initial them nightly. I take a weekly grade for complete planners, with a deduction of 10 points for days it is not signed. This system allows for one planner grade per subject in a six-week period. Please notice the green reminder in the front for homework that is the same each week. CLASSWORK: Most classwork is due on the day it is assigned. I do not allow students to take classwork home to finish unless I give permission to the entire class. Sometimes the length of an assignment may require the class to finish at home, but we usually have time to finish in class. When students waste time during class and have incomplete classwork, they may go to study hall during recess to complete it. Work may be completed in cursive or manuscript and must have the proper heading (name/number, date, and subject and page # in the top right hand corner). Missed, incomplete, or late work will count as a zero or have a deduction of points. Late work is accepted with a note from a parent. HOMEWORK: Students in my class are required to read 20 minutes nightly, Monday through Thursday. I encourage them to read during the weekend also, but it is not required. Students are also responsible for keeping a Reading Log during the year which should be signed by a parent every night, Monday-Thursday. The reading log is a yellow folder with plenty of pages. Other homework assignments will be recorded in the planner each day. Students will put graded papers in their three-ring binder by subject on a daily basis. GRADING SCALE: A = 100-93 B = 92-85 C = 84-75 D = 74-70 F = 69-0 PROGRESS REPORTS: Progress reports will be sent home after the third week of the six-week period. I return papers as they are graded so you can look for them daily. Each child is responsible for taking their papers from the class mailbox daily. If you are not seeing graded work you may need to speak with your child about being responsible for getting them to you. You may also contact me if you have concerns and we will work out a system to make sure you see them. CONFERENCES: Parent Teacher Conferences are held twice a year. Please do not wait until conference time if you have a concern. I welcome your questions and will be more than happy to meet with you to discuss your child's progress, as well as any other concerns you may have. My email address is braggj@k12tn.net or jcbragg@citlink.net. The school telephone number is 587-2290 and my home number is 587-6087. You may also communicate with me in your child's planner. If you write a note in the planner please have your child give it to me first thing in the morning so I have time to respond. STAR students and SuperSTAR: STAR stands for Students That Act Responsibly. To qualify for STAR student your child must return homework, be prepared for class each day, follow classroom procedures, and treat others with respect. STAR is not based on grades, but all STAR students do their personal best. If your child is a STAR student they may complete fifteen hours of community service to become a SuperSTAR. It is not necessary to wait until your child is chosen as a STAR student to begin working on community service. I will be sending more information about SuperSTAR hours soon. HONOR AND MERIT ROLL: Students that have an average of 93 on their report card with no grades below 90 will be on the Honor Roll. Merit Roll students must have an average of 90 on their report card with no grade below 85. Students that maintain these averages each six-week will be recognized on Honors Day in May and will have their name on the Honor and Merit Roll list on a special bulletin board in the lobby of our school. PRESIDENT'S ACADEMIC AWARD: Students that maintain a 90 average on their report cards during 4th and 5th grade will receive the President's Academic Award certificate on Honors Day in May. PEP RALLY: At the end of each 6-week we have a pep rally to recognize students that have the most AR points and time spent on Skills Tutor. Your child may log on at www.myskillstutor.com and work on any computer, any time. AR tests must be taken at school. I also give my class pizza coupons (Book It!) for taking AR tests. SNACKS: We have a ten minute break in the morning snack and drink. Your child may bring a healthy snack and drink of their choice. Chocolate, foods high in sugar, messy chips, and carbonated drinks are not allowed. Bottled water is allowed during day unless it presents a problem. BIRTHDAYS: You are more than welcome to send treats for your child's birthday. Leave them in the office and they will be delivered to the class or your child may bring them to class when they arrive in the morning. You may also send drinks (non-carbonated). HOLIDAY PARTIES: We have three holiday parties during the year. Parents may sign up to help with the Halloween party and Valentine party during registration. I encourage you to join the fun on these party dates. We will have a Christmas breakfast on the last day before Christmas vacation. I will contact you to help put treat bags together and provide the food for the breakfast. Parents attend the Halloween and Valentine parties, but not the Christmas breakfast due to early dismissal.
