When your child is the class leader, he/she will get to take home Oreo (our
class mascot) and her journal. This is a way to provide a "real" reason for
you and your child to read and write together. It is OK for your child to
scribble, draw, write random letters or actually write words using their
sounds. Your child's writing will depend on his/her level of writing
ability. Parents/guardians/older siblings may help your child but encourage
your child to do as much possible on his/her own, as it will be more
meaningful to your child. Remember to have your child write his/her name
and the date on their page. Oreo, her journal and her belongings should be
returned to school the NEXT school day so that the next leader will be able
to take Oreo home. It will be interesting to see your child's writing
skills progress throughout the year and to read about Oreo's adventures at
each classmate's house. If Oreo or her bag look dirty, please bathe her in
the washing machine and dry her in the dryer - skip the bathtub, toliet,
swimming pool or the dog's water bowl!! Treat her as an overnight guest and
you'll have a FUN time together.
