The new reading series is wonderful and the students certainly seem to be
enjoying all of the stories. Please read with you child every night. The
one on one interest you show in what your child is doing in the classroom is
a fantastic motivator.
Read over your stories for the week.
Study spelling words every night.
The addtion and subtraction fact tables 0-10 can always be practiced at
home. These tables are an important base for your child's math success.
Example:
0+0=0 1+0=1 2+0=2
0+1=1 1+1=2 2+1=3
0+2+2 1+2=3 2+2=4
0+3=3 1+3=4 2+3=5
When adding and subtracting we use this handy jingle to help us remember the
signs and rules of math.
Always use the number line
It will help you every time
Jumping up
Jumping back
When you add +
And subtract -
When counting money as we have been doing recently it is important to recall
this as a helpful tool:
A penny is one
A nickel is five
A dime is ten
And a quarter twenty-five.
We are currently reading in our 1.4 reader and the children are enjoying the
non-fiction selections. Wildlife, Pollution and Weather are topics that
will be covered in the first part of this book. The children have been busy
doing several hands on activities that relate to these areas of study. We
have created Pollution People and Pets that are displayed on our outside
wall. We used the our left over snack trash and our imagination to create
these wonderful creatures. It was great fun.
We have also been reading a thermometer and discussing weather and seasons.
We have had lots of fun drawing weather symbols and predicting and
forecasting the daily weather.
